I hear you! If you get a bench grinder to do the polishing it's really just the sanding that takes the most time. I don't try to get out every little scratch out when sanding now, I just get the anodizing off so it will polish up. For me the biggest issue is the mess--there is just no way to avoid getting filthy when doing it. I now just wait until all of the parts are sanded and do them all at once--this way I only have to clean up one mess. It always seems like more effort than it's worth until it's done--then I'm very glad I did it.

Here's one thing I did that turned out ok. i think SP's are one of the best things to polish as they are the cherry on top. 
It was a PITA as the ano and corrosion/mottling changed and resurfaced many time before I finally got it evened out.

This is my first pair so no rides yet--I have always run some version of Continentals on my road bikes and I wanted tan sidewalls for the PX-10. They went on easily and look great, I'll let you know if they ride as good as they look!

Beautiful!! You aren't wrong--the seat post looks great polished but in my experience they are often the ugliest thing on the bike--from scratches to uneven surfaces they are not easy to get looking that pretty.

Nice! I used a scotchbrite wheel to remove dings and gouges off of a seatpost, then polishing compound to get it to this state - but I only did it where it was exposed above the seat lug. I was afraid to reduce the diameter of the seat post.

This is one of the options for the custom Strawberry, still want to do a Campy 2 bolt but need to bite down on a conversion from Bob as none are long enough.
I used scotchbrite, wet/dry 800/1000? and myriad potions by hand, 2-3 days of scrubbing and sweating to get there.
Still like the chrome steel post/clamp/carriage best.
Would like to have a set done in show chrome.

This one was normal or a little less for scratches, etc. but the anno/corrosion mottling was wack, it came and went with every session.
Did it by hand as I didn't want to take it down too much and did the whole thing to see how it was working on the bottom before spending the time up higher.
Lots of futzing and myriad potions before I finally got there.

Polished stuff does look nice. But every time you polish, you're removing some metal. Do it enough and the piece will start to look like a well-used bar of soap. Of course, if you only polish occasionally, you're only damaging the part a little bit.
