His dad was basically my Dad, and my mother was more of a free spirit. So that movie hits home with me. That was a lot of people's Dad from that age group, WWII or Korea vet's that were not like many parents of the current age. My dad never would have changed a diaper or took care of sick kids, they were the money makers, not the kid watchers. It was a different time and place. I am 57 and my wife worked 12 hrs shifts as a nurse and worked nights, I was the primary parent that did most of the kid raising due to that.

I was a teenager in the '70s, and I think you nailed it. I've never been able to sit through it. Whatsisname in the lead role is insufferably bad.

"The Train" is a great steam engine WWII movie. A French bicycle plays a big part in the movie. Well worth the watch, period.

After David's short pro cycling career, where IIRC he met his wife, he came back to the US and became a HS Biology teacher. A bit of an eccentric, wearing knickers and riding a bike to work (in the 70's, in Indiana; nobody did that), he told cycling stories to his students. One of his cycling teammates went to Hollywood, and a movie was made around the stories. Dave also created a High School Little 500 (Indianapolis Arlington), where we rode honest to goodness used IU Little 5 AMF Roadmaster coaster brake bicycles. He was, funny enough, the race announcer at those events. My team came in 7th my Junior year, and 2nd my Senior year. The Cutters stuff was pure Hollywood, but Dave was at least as interesting as the movie character. Good times.
You can imagine how excited it was, to hear a movie was being made around his cycling exploits. I didn't make it down to Bloomington to be an extra, but some friends can be spotted in the crowd.

Just watched “60 Cycles” music sounds like Dick Dale. Odd surf music for a bike race in Canada but it did add to the fast tempo. Good job for 1964-65

Breaking Away is a coming of age film that happens to involve some cycling. Dennis Quaid’s first major motion picture. Dennis Christopher is a Philly boy and a smoker at the time of the film. Paul Dooley and Barbara Barrie give great performances. The later was nominated for an Oscar for her role. She lost to Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer.
I was 13 or 14 at the time and I was convinced that if my parents ever saw that movie, they'd suddenly get the idea than an ugly divorce was a good idea. They always seemed like they were one good argumemt away from a breakup as it was anyway.

I lived in Bloomington when Breaking Away was shot in 1978 and saw a few scenes filmed.
A couple of images of the filming of the scene on IU campus where Dave Stohler sees Katherine drop a notebook as she takes off on her scooter after a class. Just before Dave jumps up to retrieve the notebook and return it to her.
I began cycling while living there - great area for biking.
