Just finished putting my new commuter together. It's a Giant Escape M2, with older Shimano Deore Mech, Shifters and Brake Levers. Also non-standard are the Specialized Hemisphere Armadillo 26x1.95 tyres, the Specialized saddle the Thorn handlebar and ODI grips. Replaced the very basic flats with some used and abused DMR V8's and it's ready to go.
Still waiting for mudguards and a Deore chainset before it's 100%.
*oh, and it's a rather hefty 28lbs, but then it was chosen for sturdiness rather than flat-out speed.

make a homebrew mr-16 light system love mine
It is awesome, I am not kidding when I say my commute is now 10 minutes faster! I need to figure out my lighting scheme still. I have smoother, but not slick tires, on the way as I would like to maintain some off road prowess. As for the rigid fork I am currently enjoying the bump absorbing ride of the front shock. Chicago streets are not the smoothest so it helps!
Thank you for the input!

Half of our set up (don't have a pic of my son's bike.) He rides his bike and my daughter rides the trail-a-bike - they're 7 and 3 respectively.
It's a '92 Bridgestone XO-2. I bought it from a local BF member who had taken very good care of it. He had it set up for touring for his wife. I put the moustache bars back on, replaced the saddle with this Brooks, replaced the clipless pedals with platforms and Powergrips and put the baskets on. I chose the baskets because they were a steal on CL. I love how much I can shove in them but I am thinking I'd like something I can take on and off easier. For the commute I have a bag with clothes and such, my briefcase with laptop, and a kids bag for daycare. Since we just started commuting I've decided if by August we're still going at it, I'll invest in some nice panniers.

My Steve Rex townie, finally back in service after a job switch. It's equipped with a Nexus7 hub with roller brake (not the most effective brake). I'm 6' 5" and the frame is 66cm so people tend to move aside when they see the massiveness approaching!
The leather frame and saddle bag were purchased at Manufactum in Hamburg, but I don't think they stock them anymore!

66cm? Dang! I'm 6'4" and I have a 63cm frame as seen above, and I think that's perfect. But to each his own. You're right about cars moving out of the way for us taller guys on tall bike.

My second commuter, for longer distances and good weather because it doesn't have fenders. The other one will be short trips to the store etc. It's a fixed gear, my first ever and it's real fun to ride.

Hello everyone!
I finally decided to take pics of my daily commuter, I've been commuting 14miles round trip 5 days a week since march 08. My commute includes a little bit of everything, as I leave my house I hit a desert area, then city, and then the fun part HILLS which are what makes me look forward to riding to work. So far I haven't had any major problems with this bike except for a flat which I expected. Anyway here are the pics...
Thanks for looking .
Alex

The pack mule taking the morning coffee break...
2003 Trek 4900 with Panaracer Urban Max tires, Specialized bar ends, Planet Bike MTB fenders, Delta rack & panniers, Cateye blinky lights, Time Z Pedals. Tires are great for the road, are a bit challenging when taken off road (dirt road, single track, grass, etc); I'll replace these with some sort of 'cross tire. The Time pedals are awesome; easier to get out of than SPDs and almost as easy to get in.
After doing those things, I can wholeheartedly say that, "it doesn't suck." I was really afraid that the bike would suck when I started this commuting adventure, but it's really not bad at all.
I do about 150 miles/week on this bike. A 20-25mi RT commute accounts for most of those miles. I'm really looking forward to getting a proper bike, but the only immediate plans involve putting a Surly Instigator fork on the pack mule to make it a little better while I decide what to do about acquiring a proper commuter. And maybe a handlebar/stem replacement...and a seat...and a 12-27 cassette... ugh, well it'll make a really nice second bike one day.
