Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We are having a great time though yesterday’s 50 miles of hard rain was a little depressing. We had beautiful weather on Friday, Monday and Tuesday but rain all day Saturday, yesterday and part of Sunday. We have two more days to go but they should be nice..

I realize it's not your size, but folks over there are saying the price is too low. Do you have that white one in your stable yet?

Here's a really nice orchestral piece from the '70s that the Knoxville Community Band should perform.

In the waiting room at the doc's office. I noted the flag was at half staff. Possibly nothing more than a broken string. I'll try to remember to ask the doc. I arrived by bicycle.

Which brings me to the next thing. I cracked open that headset and found a full thickness O-ring in there. I don't recall seeing such in the top part of the headset. There has been only one mechanic on this bike for the past ten years or so. Moi. Barring other suggestions, I might just clip that O-ring and put it back together. Not even needing to remove the steerer

Is this a quill stem bike? If you're having a problem with the steerer why wouldn't you take it all apart and inspect/grease it?

The battery in my HR strap apparently died, without warning me. Garmin couldn't find it Tuesday or yesterday, so my ride was all RPE. Last night's ride was way faster - like 3 minutes faster over 22 or so miles - on the same bike, in very similar conditions. Didn't FEEL like I was working that much harder, but did feel faster.

But the funny thing is the estimated calorie burn. Here' are the last two nights, WITHOUT HR.
6/8/22 1:15:56 18.2 mph 846 kJ 1874 Cal.
6/7/22 1:19:06 17.2 mph 765 kJ 1794 Cal
Same route in May, WITH HR
5/5/22 1:20:29 17.0 mph 760 kJ 630 Cal.
I know these are often optimistic without a PM, but this is just ridiculous!!

Arkansas was actually the first place I encountered gravel roads as a normal thing (not up in the mountains). You westerners are so uncivilized.

Stay put today. Rain started at 6:30 and is supposed to continue through the afternoon. And I would have had a headwind. Not fun riding in that over this sort of terrain. Had a day of planned for tomorrow so I’m not falling behind.
