Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My wife and I attended tandem rallies in Huntsville, AL for three years and enjoyed the riding through the valleys and coves of the hilly area. So, we drove down to duplicate some of the routes and got 2 miles into the first route and came to a bridge out. In fact the same stretch of road had three bridges replaced. We returned to our hotel and started a second loop only to run in to a road closure due to a sink hole about 10 miles in.

Ok, no big deal, we combined our razor shop memories and decided to wing it for awhile. Stopped at a gas station and a cop was there so we told him where we were headed and he said, nope. There’s a bridge out. What?! Ok, we’ll go this way. Nope, roads closed due to some sort of work.

Long story short, we had to do some back-tracking but we managed 44 miles. The problem is, our routes are shot. We’re going to ride here one more day and then head to the Silver Comet trail in Georgia.

Went to winterize the boat today and the cover of the deck fill for one of the water tanks was completely frozen. I soaked it with Liquid Wrench and used a too with about a 10” torque arm, which I hit with a mallet, but only got it to back out a few threads. It’s aluminum on aluminum, but I guess enough salt gets in to bugger it up. There are two other identical fittings on the boat, which turn fine. I have a feeling it’s going to get expensive. Fortunately, nothing is going to freeze for a while.

Oh?

If you have plans on being near mile marker 8 (near the east end) I could meet you if you like. I am near that area for work so it's convenient. I could walk to the trail from my office in a minute. PM for more details.

Gets ugly after Wednesday.

I asked my tour director and she said that we won’t be getting that far to the east. We have to be home by Thursday night so she’s wanting to ride near the west end.

If you're on a tandem, be aware of a hilly area near Grady road. See link below.

Try PB Blaster. May take several shots of it over a few days. Be careful if you drink from the tank. May have to give it a good flush if you do.

who does aluminum caps on those things? Is it a weight weenie race boat? 😜. Ours were stainless.

I don't think I would bother with chief ladiga trail. It's paved but has lumpy areas and is not very wide especially for a tandem. You might want see for yourself since I'm not very familiar with it.

It's the beginning of holiday season.

It's been a bit rainy in Rochester lately.

From one of our shop rider's cam. He posted the whole race, but one lap is about 10 minutes.

The hills and valleys are beautiful, much like where you live.

You can make some incredibly rude comments.
