Speaking of stems, can someone confirm that the Sunlite 2 bolt dirtdrop stem comes in 22.2 and 25.4 quill sizes but only 25.4 clamp? Is there anything in a dirtdrop style that fits a 1-1/8" headset and has a 26.0 clamp?

I have the 25.4, and my understanding is that both have a 25.4 clamp, with the size difference being in the quill itself.

This is correct, as I recently had to return a stem that I accidentally purchase because the description made it seem like the choice was between 22.2 and 25.4 CLAMP sizes, which is NOT the case.

Re the Sunlite stem, I've had it on for two rides/60miles, and it's given me the perfect dirt drop setup. It reduced my reach by about 3in, and my hands no longer experience the numbness they did the first few days after I got my 830 going in dirt drop mode. There's a warning sticker telling you not to go on downhill bomb runs, which I wasn't planning to do, but it seems like a very well-constructed stem.

Yeah, it looks serviceable in every way except I was hoping to use it with 26.0 Nitto dirtdrop bars.

Thanks, big improvement over when I got it as a trade in last Fall. Bars are just some cheap generic drops off Ebay, 430mm wide. Nashbar 130mm "pop top" stem, SunRace STR-80 brifters and Tektro interrupter levers. Had to switch out the Deore LX front derailleur to an Exage 300 LX road triple to work with the brifters. Has the original Shimano U-brake in the rear and NOS Deore LX cantis up front. Cassette is an 11-32t 8 speed, with the 42-32-22 Deore LX crankset low/low is pretty much useless so there are some gearing changes in it's future but that's what I had at the time. Previous owner had some nice stuff on it but he had some odd stuff too andit was a real hodge podge.

I also have a Black Chrome Sierra, that has been converted. I used Origin 8 Gary bars with Shimano 7 speed bar end shifters. I recently replaced the freewheel with a 7 speed and got it to index properly with the original derailleur. The Sierra is a heavy bike, but the old school geometry means it rides like a Cadillac. Schwinn sierra frame. Would make good around town bike. Relaxed frame angles. Pretty light weight. For riders 5' to 5 ft 10 or so. 21 inch cl bottom brkt to cl top tube.

If they think that would fit a person 5 ft to 5 ft 10 in, they have obviously never seen the bike built up. It has a high bottom bracket. Mine is a 19 inch frame and the stand over is about 32 inches. I don't know the top tube off hand, but it is long. 5 ft 10 in would be the low end of fitting that frame.

there are also a ton of these in the sf bay area all the time. almost tried to get a 2nd one cause more original components, better shape, closer to my size and i think i could have gotten it for like 50$

I have a drop bar MTB that built from a frame someone was throwing out. IT is an old Paramount PDG20 which cleaned up ok. I must have something set up strange. I have measured and measured again but still have the same problems. My knees bother me after riding. Even just a mile or a few blocks. My other bikes i ride 30-40 miles at a time no problem. I keep thinking this one must have a different seat tube angle or somthing. Even in a light gear...same problem. I have it setup as my grocery getting....with rear rack and panniers for light grocery loads. It goes great but my knees hate it. I have adjusted the seat every which way i can think of even lining it up next to my road bike to confirm i have height set the same. The reach is a bit farther just due to the longer top tube. I am wondering if the seat angle is more thus putting me farther away from the bars slightly...which forces me to push my saddle forward (fore-aft) to compensate. From what i can see my knee is still over the pedal axle but it is hard to see accurately while on the bank........or perhaps it is the 175mm cranks. I have 175s on another bike that doesnt cause me this problem. I dont know. I just want to get groceries . Every time i want to take the bike to the store, i dread the knee ache for a day or 2 afterwards. It doesnt hurt while riding. It comes after the fact.

Are you measuring seat height for the two bikes from the ground or the center of the bottom bracket? If one has a higher bottom bracket the distance between the pedals and the seat will change even if height from ground to saddle is the same.

Hey everybody,
Long time lurker, first time poster. This thread is great, thanks for all the inspiration. I've been following it for a few months now and decided to convert my old 90s rockhopper to a drop bar build. I got it off craigslist a year or two ago for only $100 (came with the flame paint job). I was lucky enough to find some suntour barcons at a shop for only $30. I was a complete novice in regards to bike mechanics prior to this and I think everything turned out all right. Nothing broke when I took it on the trail.

That little blue logo is Compass. Judging by the fatness, probably a Rat Trap Pass. I've got the Extralight version of that tire in black on my own drop-bar Stumpy, and it's probably my favorite tire. Very light for its size, versatile, and performs like a good road tire on the road. Also has beautiful road hum, even with butyl tubes installed.

Just swapped in a new cockpit: Technomic stem (all the way down, it's hit bottom!) Winpista bars, RSX 3x7 brifters. Old, used white vinyl bar tape, probably older than the bike. That stuff recycles nicely. Also a late 80's Vetta saddle; definitely older than the bike. Obviously, I had to stretch the bike out a bit to fit me and honestly, I could use another inch of setback on the post if I want to get my customary Brooks Pro to sit in the correct position. 27.2 post - anyone have a recommendation for what I should look for to get back a bit further?





Haha, whoops! I screwed up and put 27" rims on it! Don't worry; they won't be there for long.

This frame is from an era of C-dale that switches between 700c and 27" with just a slight realignment of the brake pads. Sweet! The sharp-eyed among you will have noticed these rims are from a late 1980s Schwinn, with the front wheel having Lawyer Levers flapping in the breeze with nothing to lock onto. I just wanted to try these rims and tires on it to see if it would give it a more standard road-bike feel. It did. Swinging the tire pendulum the other way, it looks like it'll handle at least 700x 48mm tires, putting me into monstercross territory. That's where this one will eventually end up. I took the tires off the original rims and weighed them at 710g each, ugh! Surely we can find a suitable 700c tire around 40mm a bit lighter than that?

I'm going to have fun tinkering around on this one.
