Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No idea, but back then a 5 mile tow cost $22.50 and a road service call (jump start, put the spare tire on) was $12.50 and we were expensive. Auto club calls all paid the same regardless of what you had to do. It was $3.75 iirc. I got paid by the hour during the day and 50% commission at night when it was slow. So if an auto club member got a flat on the freeway in the rain at 2:00 a.m. I had to get out of bed and go put their spare on for less than two bucks. Fortunately most graveyard shifts were covered by a vampire who was up all night anyway.

Every now and then I think "Wouldn't it be an awesome adventure to do Iditabike (whatever they officially call it)?"

I just have to make sure I occasionally read articles with passages like this, just to keep me from attempting such a thing

“I clocked 49 degrees on my thermometer at the peak in one day, and so everything turned to slush,” Golfman said. “I ended up spending almost two days pushing my bike, and my every bit of gear got wet because the second day it rained, and I was pushing my bike through about seven hours of rain. Everything got drenched.”
Then there's the frostbite stories.

A lot of the pics are just awesome though.

Looks a little breezy here, but otherwise ideal cycling conditions:

Interesting email came through at work with a link to a survey asking whether we would prefer our schedule to consist of 5-8's, 4-9's with a half day Friday, or 4-10's with Fridays off.

Every weekend being a 3 day weekend sounds amazing, but I don't know if I could stand being in the office for 10 hours, 4 days in a row.

I'd write in four 9s, 3 day weekends. 36 hours work is plenty!

There was just a small tornado in the East L.A. area. It ripped some roofs off some industrial buildings and tipped over a truck or 2.

I just got in from what is likely my last ride in decent weather until the end of October. I went out later than I should have because I knew I would be a regretist if I didn't take advantage of the last nice day.

You're lucky they didn't propose 5-10's.

I remember doing 5x12s in my youth. And I'd occasionally volunteer for a 6th and 7th day also when available.

Those 13 and 14 day paychecks were FAT!

Blue skies are emerging! Time to go turn the sparkling clean Lemond into an absolutely filthy, grimy mess.

Ten hour days are not that bad. That's been my life for 38 years. Except, I worked Fridays and most Saturday mornings as well.

I'm trying to transition to 4 day work weeks, but it's not always possible in my occupation.

I run subtitles for many programmes, but never sports. Although I could really use them sometimes when Sean Kelly is on the mic!!!

I was an electronic assembler and they made us work 5 10s when we were busy. It was already a horrible job, we sat in stools at a big table stuffing parts into printed circuit boards and we were not allowed to talk. 10 hours of that was torture. $2 per hour turned into $3 overtime. Whoopee!

I worked at a gas station/garage where we so busy we could work as late as we wanted, 6 days many weeks. I remember being so exhausted I couldn't think straight.
