Sort of a pseudo TT bike, but I'm guessing the geometry will never be perfect for that, other than being a little undersized for me. Just gonna have fun with it.



I also have a trimmer saddle that would look better here. The 2x1 setup is just for kicks, not a lot lighter anyway due to my use of an old derailleur as a tensioner. The single speed tensioner I have doesn't have enough capacity for the 53/39 chainrings. I just wanna ride it and see how it does. If I frickin' love it, I might leave it like that for a while. If not, I'll start to find parts to get it back to something sorta similar to its original configuration, though with a somewhat wider cogset range than it originally sported. Probably stick with the downtube shifters (already have the front one working fine), and if I go back to a fully geared drivetrain, may still keep the bullhorn bar. We'll see. This bike doesn't really fill a 'need', so it's purely experimental. I do kinda take a fancy to the idea of using it to pick up a KOM or three.

Got a few rides on it before the snows set in--stiff but not harsh. I like it, but my favorites are the Black Lightnings with Superbe Pro...

What year is this? Can't tell if it has fat tubes or not. Also what's the best way to strip the paint like this? Did you polish it at all?

in what was possibly the dumbest thing I've done recently, I got a 1986 SR600 from a guy at the homeless shelter next door for 250 (he offered 200 which seemed like a ripoff)





Replacement rims need to go, some of the bearings (particularly the pedals) are in rough shape but the majority of the parts are original.

It's a 90's Criterium frame. I used generic paint stripper and then wet sanded everything, then finished with Mother's aluminum polish. Took me a couple of hours spread over a few winter Sunday's. Final step was putting Bike Lust on it. The frame's been sitting in the garage (gotta get it on Ebay one of these days) and isn't showing signs of outrageous oxidation.

H400 from the co-op's dumpster, missing hanger and with broken cable guides. It hung indoors for a few years and they finally got rid of it. This would make a nice project for someone who fits it. I won't be hanging onto it but I could not let it go to the dump or recycling.

This was my first road bike, an R500 purchased back in 1995. It came with an RX100 triple, and 7 speeds in the rear, and downtube shifters. I very quickly modified all that, so it was running a Campy Racing T triple crankset, Sachs New Success Ergopower levers and rear derailleur, and 8 speeds. It came with a threadless headset, and a fairly short stem, which I replaced with a 3T Forge Ahead stem, which stretched me out a bit more but also raised the bar about a cm or so.

I got another bike after owning this for about 2 years, and after that it didn't get much use. In fact, it's largely gone unridden the last 20 years!

Last month I got it in my head to take it back to the mid 90s again. I still had the original brake levers, and of course the dual pivot RX100 brakes are excellent. I decided to run it as a double, and 8 speeds because I have a couple 8sp Dura Ace 12-25 cassettes with life left in them. I decided on downtube shifters even though there were RX100 STIs. I spent a month accumulating bits from Ebay, including a 53/39 crankset in 175mm, which came with the correct 107mm bottom bracket.

In Italian thread. Even I knew that wouldn't fit.

So, back to Ebay for a 107mm BB in English threading. It took its own sweet time arriving, while I chewed my nails. While I was waiting for that, all the other bits arrived. Finally last Thursday I had the new BB and crankset installed, and I spent a happy evening rebuilding it! Today I took it out for a 51 mile ride, and it performed like a champ!

Picked this one up not long ago. The previous owner installed 9 speed Dura Ace barcons, which don't play well w/ the 6 speed freewheel. The blue sparkle paint & silhouetted decals don't match anything in the Cannondale catalogs. Other than the shifters, it came w/ full Shimano 600 components. The plan was to pass it along to my son after I got it dialed in, but he just found another bike he enjoys, so not sure if this will be a keeper or not.

This year's Clunker Challenge bike is making me rethink my lugged steel partisan ways. Once I can spend money on it, I think this bike deserves a makeover as a dedicated long-haul and cycle-camping steed. Odd note - I brought it home on May 19, did some research and found the serial number - and it apparently was built on May 19, 1986. So, happy birthday, bike! If anyone has a lead on the correct Tange fork with low-rider mounts, I would love to know about it!

I got this Cannondale touring bike last month at the Memory Lane swap in Ohio. It has a 1989 serial number but the color looks like the 1990 ST400 catalog pictures. The frames are the same for the different models, just different colors and components. It looks pretty rough, but after removing all the dirt and electrical tape, the frame looks good. It came with mismatched wheels: front is 27 inch, rear is 700. There is a center pull brake on the rear instead of cantilever, probably due to the wheel size. It also had mismatched crank arms. I have been putting it together with stuff I had on hand. If I can get a break in the weather this week, I hope to get a ride in so I can make a better evaluation of what needs done. From the shorts test rides to the corner and back, it looks promising.

I just picked up one of the tubular bags people have talked about in this thread. It was listed as a short top tube bag, so there were no takers. Was very glad to be able to compare it to other examples in this thread, know what it was, and get it at a price I was very happy with. I didn't NEED another saddle bag, but there always seems to come a time when one would be handy and I love the long skinny shape for 2 tubes, a number of full sized tools (like a tire bead jack) on a go-fast bike with skinny saddle.

Picked up this SM800 last year and just didn’t know what to do with it since the bike is a bit small (24” wheels). Went way off script and just relaunched it as a 1x5 bmx cruiser. Now it’s an upright, comfortable and sweet little ride.

Just one (low quality) teaser pic for now; 1990 ST1000. The rear brakes appear to have plenty of vertical adjustment for a 27 to 700 conversion, but there's some work to be done. I'll be moving most of the parts over from my Voyageur SP, but first, the bike needs to be cleaned up a bit. Very excited to finally have tracked one of these down. Far from a deal, but who cares?
