Wow, you went right at it, nice bike and upgrades ! Can't tell from the pic, what size is your cassette ? Is it that big or is that the chain guard that makes it look big ? Just wondering...

Wow, thats a monster cassette ! Though, I don't know the type of riding you do, but I think you will like the 11/36. I think that 11/42 is more "geared" towards serious MTB riding. Let us know how you like the new gearing.

I guess for the X1 with 1x11 you would need 42 cog for climbing or you will get lactic acid rush

Once one gets below 30 on that cassette, the cog sizes will probably be the same, so unless the bike isn't shifting well because of the 42 cog, I'm not sure why 11/36 would be an improvement?

My thinking is, if you never use the top or lower gear; like the OP seems to be at, why waist a gear ? I changed my new FX gearing, from a front 50/34 to a rear 11/32 to a 46/36 in front and 12/25 in the rear. Where I ride theres not many hills, but plenty of stop and go, but where I notice a difference with the new gears is riding against the wind. I can just "throttle back" one gear and maintain momentum and keep a good cadence. To me, I ts nice to have a bunch of close gear ratios, if of course you ride on mostly flat roads and trails.

Yes, but a 11/36 won't really give you any close gear ratios than a 11/42.


The first 8 or 9 gears will likely be identical.

I think you would really be surprised how well a close ratio gearing works. I really think it just depends on what type of riding you do.

If you get rid of the 42 gear and change to a 36 low gear wouldn't you pick up more "useable" gear ratios ? if you never use the 36 or even the 30 gear why have it ? I'm assuming that the gear ratios would be closer on a 11/36 cassette than a 11/42 cassette ?

I've had a few beers, maybe better to discuss tomorrow with a (more clear?) clearer (?) mind.

Obviously with the caveat of "it depends where and how you ride" but... close ratio gears was a HUGE improvement for me and I'm now looking to go even closer. went from 11/32 to 12/25 (9spd). I mostly ride in the 10mi - 30mi range and a 20mi loop would probably give me 800ft in elevation change - I don't know if that's considered a "a lot" or "a little" bit of hills but I assume it's not too much as I basically live on an island (cape cod)! I don't know what the gradient is but I've never had to dig deeper than a 34x21 for any reason and I've never got off my bike.

I agree, I'm running a 11speed with 46/36 up front and 12/25 in the rear, and I love it.

That's very interesting to me actually I built a chart to show speeds but don't have it I. Front of me. How fast and how slow do you think you could go (mph) with your gear set in the big ring only (46T).

I really have no idea, I'm guessing it really depends on the strength of the rider. I just try to average between 16-17 mph and I find my gearing set up works well, I rarely use the 12 or 25 rear gears. I stay in the 46 on long stretches and the 36 in the city doing a lot of stop and go.

new to the scene

Hi,


I live in Chicago and I'm new to this forum and to the bicycle scene. I just picked up a 2017 Sirrus Sport. I plan on using this bike strictly for exercising/fitness purposes. I got sick of running so wanted to switch it up.

I'm hoping to learn a lot from everyone on here.

Hello, everyone. I have a 2010 Sirrus Sport with 14mm interior-width rims. I'm curious if anyone has been able to get 38mm tires (or larger) on their Sirrus? I have 32s currently, but would like something bigger to provide a more comfortable ride. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just read the whole thread. Seems that no one has anything bad to say about the Sirrus. I tried one at my LBS and liked it, but needed to do more research before biting.

What are people's opinions on how well this bike could stand up to a commute which mostly avoids roads (due to heavy traffic / safety concerns) and instead needs to frequently take some bumps at speed (like a sidewalk crossing a road or a root growing under a paved path) and even perhaps jump a standard curb at speed? There are some nice paved paths along the route, so I'd like to be able to get some decent speed on them while still retaining the ability to call audibles when trying to avoid traffic or whatever that may take me over a few feet of less ideal terrain.

Also, does anyone know if there are any fenders available that fit cleanly on this bike at tire sizes larger than 30? I'm not sure what tire size I'd want, but with a limestone path near me for recreational riding I might need to go bigger than the 30 that the Specialized plug and play fenders can fit. I'm also interested in semi-slick tires for occasional corner cutting on grass between two sidewalks.

My new Sport Disc, picked it up over the weekend, rode it around yesterday and to work this morning, really nice ride. It's got the plug and play fenders and I added a Topeak Explorer rack. Note that there seems to be a v2 version of the fenders and that is the one that I saw had 30mm requirement. Maybe yours are v1 or something?

Posted this in another thread, but it's relevant here...

UPDATE: Finally made it to my LBS. Rode the Specialized Sirrus Comp Carbon and the Giant Fastroad Comax 1. Both excellent bikes indeed. I liked the "fit and feel" of the Specialized best but liked the upgraded components and the narrower tire size (30mm on Specialized, 25mm on the Giant). For what it's worth, while the Giant had a supposedly "softer" frame (carbon composite vs. full carbon on the Specialized), I thought the Giant had a "stiffer" feel to it. Perhaps is was the narrower tires but I'm not really sure. I ended up ordering the Specialized Sirrus Expert Carbon (in red), which is basically the Sirrus Comp Carbon with the component level of the Giant Fastroad Comax 1. I'll probably have the LBS swap out the 30mm tires for 25's or maybe 28's.

Ordered my wife the Sirrus Vita Comp Carbon (in blue).

My LBS made me great on ordering both. Scheduled for fitting and pickup in a week. Very anxious to start putting some miles on these new rides.

I have the "plug and play" fenders on my 2016 Expert Carbon and am running a 32mm tyre on the rear. Clearance is tight but acceptable.

The fenders are no more "plug and play" than they are made of unicorn horn but once they're on they do look the part. I had to purchase additional hardware to install them, I'd get your LBS to install them if I were you.
