Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Last bike I bought was my P3 in 2015 (sold in 2019). I really want to go Di2 and put my 6800 on my wife’s bike. I love everything about my Marvel and think it’s worth converting/upgrading rather than buying a new bike. Maybe in 2023. We’ll see how the next few months shake out.

The 12-speed Di2 was a really worthwhile update to my '20 Domane SL. The R7000 105 drivetrain was really nice, but the Di2 just takes things to a different level.

I never worked on a VW after 1989 but I put so many turbos on GM 1.4 engines it's ridiculous. It's kind of a giant ass-pain and warranty time is about 2 hours, iirc.
People don't change their oil and the little feed pipe gets plugged and the impeller burns up and falls off. We warranty it anyway. The most common failure is the wastegate sticks open a bit and sets an underboost code. It's all integral to the exhaust manifold so you replace the whole thing.

GM said we (techs nationwide) were replacing too many of them so they said we had to prove there was underboost by graphing the data @ wide open throttle during the 1-2 shift and print it out and send it in with the old turbo. So if the wastegate only sticks when cold or whatever you would be flogging the hell out of the customer's car trying to get data which would show underboost. Plus, try driving a car WOT to the first shift when there's traffic everywhere.

You did Ultegra? I was going to pull the trigger on it, but want to wait and see w. 12 speed GRX hopefully coming. Would really prefer a RD with a clutch so I don’t have chain slap every time I rode gravel

I did Ultegra, but I'll only use the bike on the road.

Would like to put the 105 Di2 on my wife's bike, but she thinks it is a waste. And, she may be right in her case.

Friday morning, I took the first flight out of our local airport, and landed in Eugene, OR at just after 9am. My daughter picked me up, we stopped for breakfast at IHOP, and hit the road for the 2-day drive to So Cal. It had been raining in Eugene for a couple of days, which also dumped fresh snow on the 4000’+ high mountain passes in So OR and No CA. The day before, there were reports of multiple accidents, and potential road closures. Looking at a couple of different websites that monitor live road conditions, we stuck with our initial plan to take the most direct route (I-5). We had a lot of rain, and a little snow (falling, but not sticking), but the roads were fine. We stayed in Sacramento on Friday night, and finished the journey on Saturday, getting home just after 3:00. I really enjoy road trips with my daughter. We enjoy a lot of the same music - old and new - and are very compatible in the car together for long durations. Things have taken a little bit of a twist since we were driving her car, and she was doing most of the driving, but I’m enjoying being on the passenger side. My daughter is home for a month, and has plans to drive back to school with friends, so I’m not sure when our next road trip will be.

I have an XT derailleur with a clutch on my 1x11 mtb. I usually don't use the clutch but when I do it shifts a little slower. That bike doesn't have much chainslap and never drops the chain.

So my wife knows that my father has LOTS of old tools and asked him for his electric drill. He generously gave it to us, along with a bunch of drill bits.

She asked me how to use it. I showed her and explained "you have to find the right size drill bit" and she asked why she would want a drill bit....I explained that's the point of a drill is to DRILL holes.

She said "Oh, I want to use it to install tough-to-turn screws!" I had to explain to her that this is an electric drill and it does NOT have variable speeds NOR does it have a clutch, so it's NOT really designed to drive in screws.

She then said, ok but can we get the plastic brush attachment to use this to clean out the shower tiles etc.....and I had to explain that for the same reason it's not designed to drive screws, it's not really designed to clean bathrooms either.

Was considering doing 105 RD and Ultegra everything else. I like the idea of having a 36t on the gravel wheels. Also considered 105 with a different crank.

I forgot to put the clutch on at Rasputitsa last spring and dropped my chain 3 minutes in going over 40 downhill. Could have been a fluke though

Ten bucks, works with any drill, and you'll have clean bathrooms: RotoScrub Cleaning Kit Attachment in the Drill Parts & Attachments department at Lowes.com

Don't miss the opportunity.

I picked up some wire wheels and chucked 'em in to my drill to clean up some rust. *shrug*

But yeah, I think that you should take the opportunity to pick up a nice impact driver for those screws - 1500 in lbs should do it.

I still have my 7.2 volt Makita that I won for customer satisfaction points in around 1992. Last battery I bought was around $50, could have bought a nice drill for a bit more. The charger quit working so I took it apart and soldered the printed circuit board. Then one of the gears broke, the spindle the gear rotates on broke off. I drilled a hole into the gear and used the shank of a drill to make a spindle for the gear. It's been working like that for years.

I burned up an old power drill replacing the deck nails with screws when I lived in the mountains. We had 3 decks. It was my father's from way back. I bought a nice power drill to finish the job and it hasn't been used much since I never took it to work. I have a pneumatic drill which I used at work for 35+ years.
