Addiction 2022.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today was one of those days that FEELS cooler than it actually IS. I had on a baselayer, LS jersey, vest, and tights, and periodically wished for a jacket, but the lowest the temp got was 55. A lot of other riders agreed with me - lots of warmers, vests, jackets, tights, etc. And then some guys in short sleeves and shorts. Shows you what pansies we Bay Area cyclists can be...

Another great ride in the books. I managed to hit 20mph on the flat and average 13mph. And I cut four minutes off Friday's ride. I cannot seem to stop competing with myself.

The only take out places around my old place were McDonalds, Burger King, a third rate diner, and two Chinese joints. Pathetic. We had Chinese virtually every Saturday night because there were no other options.

Addendum to today's ride post - the bike. This is a 2006 Bianchi 928 Veloce with a couple upgrades/updates. The crankset is last year's Centaur, and the stem and bars are Zipp Service Course - alloy, not carbon. I ain't that rich. Wheels are last year's Fulcrum Racing 5s replacing the old Fulcrum 5s that came with it. Every new bit I put on, the bike seems to get black-er. Maybe I should ditch the Celeste bar tape, but that seems sacrilegious.

don’t ditch it, it matches the accents on the fork and top tube! over here in all black bike land i’m struggling for justifications for anything other than black tape.

today i had a glorious 90 mile loop planned to petaluma and back … or an 80 mile loop to nicasio reservoir and back if i got tired. daylight savings got me out the door at 8am, only to find the golden gate bridge closed due to the half marathon. did 52 miles around SF, twin peaks, san bruno mountain instead … but i was really looking forward to the redwoods.

The Bianchi is the only black bike I own, and as you can see it's not even all black. It's got those "Mid-Oughts highlights".

You did Mt San Bruno? Cool! I actually work at the corner of Guadalupe Canyon and Bayshore, but in the 5 years I've been here I haven't ridden up it. Somebody told me the shoulder is too full of debris - is that anything like true? Now that I have no group to look after, I'm thinking about doing mid-day, midweek rides from the office, and since the mountain looms over me, it's an obvious choice. And we're only here till April, so I better do it soon, if I'm gonna do it at all!

Would have preferred the Bills, but those Jets looked good.

I know; I'm actually surprised it took this long and appears to have just happened, not even in a storm or anything.

That Jets win had to be the biggest upset of the day, at least.

Tampa Bay looks pretty bad on offense today. Can't count that old QB out yet, though.

I only have one. Could use 3 more. I should probably get a couple 27.2 ones while they're available (if they're still available)

it’s no kind of glamorous climb, that’s for sure, but it’s a steady grade, a wide shoulder, and a nice distance for an easy climb. around 700’ or so and no cross traffic. you can really bomb it on the downhill (strava segment is called “guadalupe canyon bombing run”), long sweeping turns, headwind from the west means you don’t really need to brake if you’re comfortable in the 30-45mph range. pavement isn’t bad at all, never had any traffic issues or shoulder issues. i do like the varia for this hill since traffic is a bit faster than typical for a bay area climb.

if you want to go the top, radio road is closed to cars but the pavement is crap. ok for the climb, bad descent!

It's good to hear they're still around. I haven't checked in a year or so and it seems to me like that size will disappear soon.

Since people are using them on gravel and even road bikes I think 27.2 should be around for a while.

This is the first one that popped up (no pun intended). It's only 100mm though but that might be enough for many riders.
