Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Agree. It’s unfortunate that many of our fellow Americans seem to forget this.

Nice! I am so close to 10,000 and now I’m concerned I won’t make it, not if I can’t get rid of this sickness.

Took a covid test when I got home, to my dismay it was negative. Positive would have been paid time off, maybe I could actually recover.

It actually shifts really well with the 9 spd cassette, Tempted to ride it like that until I get the wheel.

Rj, tell me why that’s a bad idea.

I’ll take that as a no. Not because it won’t work, more like I don’t want the new chain, chain rings mixed with the old cassette.

I just ordered a full set of Wagner ceramic brakes for the Fit. $90. I didn't really want ceramic, but that's all they had available. They tell me they will be at my door on Monday. I did not order from Amazon.

Are you tracking total climbing?
I have a friend who insisted on doing over 600K feet every year in about 8K miles. He did this for at least 15 years, maybe more. He's 75 now and I rarely see him but I saw him Saturday (by chance) on Mulholland Drive. He was moving slow and said he rides alone most of the time.

600K isn't a huge amount unless you consider doing it year after year. It's 11.5k per week, which is doable even for someone like me, but every week for years?

Try switching the front and rear shifter cable housings in front of the head tube, meaning put the rear one behind the front - may help center the overlap.

You need a new wheelset. Those old 32 spokers just look out of place with the new kit.

Some good ones around here. There is a park a few blocks from home and they had 10-12 trucks every Tuesday but that ended with covid and I don't know if they're coming back.
It was great to get awesome tamales right around the corner.

I forgot to tell the mechanic to install the cable splitters for the brake and shifting cables, he thought they were barrel adjusters, so didn’t add them.

Not everyone is familiar with the brake away system. I’ll worry about it later.

I don’t pay as much attention to total climbing, but of course I love going up hills (much more than going down TBH) and Strava says 574k feet of climbing so far this year.

Yeah that's a lot considering you work and have winter.

I agree about the downhills, especially the roads with holes and broken concrete or cracks parallel to the road. There is one we ride on pizza days which has shadows with splotches of sun and bad pavement so you can't see anything.

fwiw I think I do 300ish thousand feet.

Sweet!

My boss just told me I need to bill more hours next year.

On the other had, youngest child graduates with his masters degree in a week, and starts work mid-January. That’s like a bonus, isn’t it?

putting a kid through school is like buying a new car each year - and pushing it off a cliff
