Had the same left side, about a 5 inch incision. Gave me 5 small oxycodone pills, I didn't take either. Ibuprofen, was enough, more or less.

82 degrees. It occurred to me, yesterday, that our temperature swing, annually, is only 50 degrees. In New England it's closer to 100. We go 54 - 104, with anything on either side being a rarity.

I once developed sudden spinal cord damage from a known cervical disc problem and went painlessly tingly from the neck down. I paged the neurosurgery resident on call and headed to the ER for an MRI. There was nothing to do that night, so I put on my coat and headed for the door. On the way out, I had to check in with the ER doc, who reached into a cabinet, stuffed 20 Percocets into pill bottle, and confided them to me. I protested, stating that I had no pain at all, but he said, "just take them" like it was the least he could do for a VIP.

Of course, after surgery, the surgeons forced more dope, plus a bunch of benzos, on me and made me promise to take them regularly, which I did, for a while, and got **** from LSS for being high.

Interesting. I practically had to beg for some Percs to take home with me when I was discharged after my valve replacement way back in '90. I told them I had to travel the next day, which was true. (Had the surgery in Pittsburgh and was taking the train home to Philly the next day.) They finally agreed to give me a week or so worth of them because of the fear of addiction. I was already addicted after 10 days in the hospital. I used to wake up the morning and ask for my "happy pills." As my supply at home started to dwindle, I started taking one or two fewer pills a day to make them last.

When I had my thumb surgery on 12/17/20 I got sent home with a healthy supply of some painkiller. The supply was great enough that a nurse strongly advised me to buy and take stool softener. I think I only took them for about a week, and never in the daily quantity prescribed.

I was intubated for 5 days after breaking 12 ribs, a scapula, and a clavicle (bike crash) and developed a pleural effusion. After ICU, I was on a fentanyl patch for 3-1/2 weeks. Didn't feel any pain or any affects from the patch until I thought I'd sneak a drive to our local convenient store a half mile away. I overran the first corner that I came to. Brain, eyes, arms weren't working together. Luckily, it was 6 AM and no one was around. I gingerly and slowly turned the car around and went home but no way was I going to put the car in the garage.

Also, I learned not to overheat or I became stumble-drunk. Other than overheating or the driving thing, I never noticed the patch.

IIRC, The doctor and my state trooper son both ordered me not to drive for 96 hours after the last patch was removed.

I told my orthopedic surgeon before I had my larval repair 6 years ago that I wanted an opioid free pain management plan. He laughed and said I was going to change my mind. I figured since it was arthroscopic I’d be fine.

I was under anesthesia for close to 5 hours with my hip in traction for four. He ground off a ton of bone on the head of my femur and outside of the hip and did microfracture to bring blood to the site where the labrum was anchored back in place.

When I woke up I was in a **** ton of pain, and when asked if I wanted a percocet I immediately said yes.

He prescribed me a few days worth for breakthrough pain and it was enough to make it manageable, I can’t imagine going without it. I was sick when I came off it after only a little time.

In other news it's so windy here it's ridiculous. 55 mph gusts are predicted, things are blowing around the yard, the gates have been ripped open, and the house has been shaking all night. Maybe no ride today.

The poppy is a gift from a merciful god, no doubt. The neck would actually have been perfectly survivable without narcs and I was off completely at 36 hours, but I've had a couple of things where I was glad to have them.

It strikes me as odd that in 1990 there seemed to be such concern about doling them out in a situation like mine. (It's not like I simply sprained my ankle.) Was a lessening of that type of concern what led to the opioid crisis?

With all this talk, I remember my sister gave me half a Xanax once, and I was shocked by its properties. She was on a three a day regimen, which I found to be unbelievable.

In cycling news: I've been considering ditching my Edge in favor of a watch this year. But the cheap Forerunner i had wasn't going to cut it and I didn't want to shell out big bucks.

Then, I got an email notification that this was on closeout.

My wife refers to Xanax as a "reset button". It knocks her out, hard, for a while. Meanwhile, I know someone else who takes Xanax daily (Dr prescribed), and functions at a high level.

Yesterday we rode from the bottom of Angeles Crest to Encanto park and up to the mouth of Hwy 39. A little breeze in places but when I got home the trees were bent way over. Not like now, though. Now it's a bit scary.
