Clunker 100 Challenge #8

I hereby present the Clunker Challenge 100 #8

Past iterations

2014: C&V Clunker 100 Challenge
2016: C&V Clunker Challenge 100
2017: C&V Clunker Challenge 100 #3
2018: C&V Clunker Challenge 100 #4
2019: Clunker Challenge #5
2020: Clunker 100 Challenge COVID edition #6
2021: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ition-7-a.html

You have 100 days starting today, April 14, 2022, ending July 23, 2022 at 11:59pm to complete the following:

- $108USD (or local equivalent) firm budget to purchase a C&V bicycle and get it back on the road. This $108 includes initial bicycle purchase and all consumables/parts to make it go again. You may have to cut corners but this is all part of the fun. That wal-mart saddle just might have to be your hatchet if you spent all your money on new tires. Your time, tools, cleaning supplies, gas/transit to go get it and grease are free. Count them if you'd like. If you are buying new or used, record that price. If you are using something you already have and know what you paid, use that price. If you can't remember, use the fair market value of the item. If in doubt, ask. Shipping is a cost to be factored in. While anyone who wishes to participate is encouraged to follow the spirit of the game and go out and get a new bicycle, an untouched project waiting in the shed is ok, too.

- Swapping one part out for another does not cancel out the value added to the bicycle. As found = purchase price. adding items costs money unless you sell the old ones.

- If you sell a part you remove from the bike, you may add the sale price to your budget. You actually have to find a real buyer for your ****e to gain a few sheckles.

- Keep a detailed list and updated before, during and after pictures in this thread on your purchases and progress. We fiend for this sort of thing.

- A minimum of 100km or 100mi if you want to be an imperial troope ridden on your new bike. Take photos of the rebuild and of the bicycle in the places you go and post them here. Perhaps you'll have a newfound admiration for stem shifters and solid axles. Or maybe you'll hate everyone after five minutes on the bike and keep using Photobucket to share photos.

- Arbitrary style and value points. You'll get style points for both the nicest finds/builds AND the bikes that make us say "That thing actually survived 100km?". Going as cheap and crummy as possible is a badge of honour. Bonus points for using a real POS in as-found condition (flipped bars, rusted cables, saddle at a 45 degree angle, etc.) and preserving the integrity of the previous owner's ingenuity and mechanical skills.

Judging: Bribery and flattery is acceptable and encouraged. If anyone actually has too much free time and bribes me I will post contents of bike related packages for others to covet and oggle.

I've added 8 whole dollars this year to coincide with the 8th iteration and rampant inflation. Please spend it wisely.

I plan on finishing this year.

I could choose to use my "$100, in great shape other than the stuck seatpost Schwinn KOM" I picked up for $100, but not exactly a clunker.

Andy K’s n-1 post got me dredging for $2-$100 bikes and I scored. I need a judgment regarding selling the Roadmaster to augment my budget for the Impact Pro MOS.

Yay!!!

Okay - so in the last days of Clunker 100 Challenge COVID 2.0 edition #7 I bought this poor old 1989 Schwinn LeTour for $15 from a guy well off the paved roads on the outskirts of Due West, SC -

Seller's picture from FB Marketplace

With the nasty saddle cover removed.

I've never worked with indexing SunTour stuff before - but the rust and mud are familiar!

I bet I can fix that tear.

Hoping the rust is only on the outside of the headset!

I foresee at least two gallons of Evapo-Rust in this bike's future!

Gotta love the combo of faux Grab-On foam, electrician's tape and the novel routing of the brake cables!

Hallelujah, the seat post is NOT stuck!

The reflector bracket is more rust than metal!

Greenville, MS-built!

And it is currently in the rented storage unit with the bars turned parallel to the frame and the pedals off, where it has been waiting, nay, longing for this day! Let the misplaced priorities begin!

There should be bonus points awarded for fastest downhills on these rigs.

Late 70s Peugeot UO 10 I picked up for $40. I've been meaning to rebuild this to sell for a while. I might as well ride it and see if it really is true what folks say about the magic of French hi tensile steel bikes,

Hmm, I bought this Peugeot UO8 for $50 back in Dec (well, I bought two bikes for $100, so assume $50 each):

I've since sold off the saddle, pump, brakes and levers for about $125, so I'm $75 in the black! Of course, both cotters need to be drilled out, and I'd need to replace all of those parts. And it's too big for me, but that all sounds in keeping with the Clunker Challenge vibe.

OK, I’m gonna give it a go this year!

This is a Univega Ital Sport I bought complete off local CL for $75 a year or so ago. I sold the parts and wheels (well, except for the stem) for I forget how much but it was a least $75 . I am not going to bill for the time spent trying to get that stem unstuck. If I could bottle and sell the bonding force of a stuck stem or post, I’d be a rich man and a lot of the world’s problems would be solved.

Next step will be trip to the coop for a new old fork. I do have an old 1” MTB cantilever fork which might just vault this bike to the top of the clunker leaderboard.

Time is tight due to our looming cross country trek back to Oregon, training for Cino, selling/downsizing from the "too big" Oregon home, etc. but will definitely ride a Clunker again this year...Somehow! Don

I don't know if you've tried this method, but I used it to free a hacked off hunk of stem lodged in the steerer of my Tim Neenan Lighthouse - it involved some saw cuts, but in the end I think it was the socket wrench and the hammer - the cylindrical shape transmitted the force more effectively in whacking the thing out. I used a big wooden block and a headset locknut to prevent damage to the steerer threads. And if you haven't noticed, Clunker Challenge and smacking things with a big hammer go together like grits and gravy.

This bike gets serious style points just for the rack; just sayin.

I think if you choose this one for Clunker Challenge duty, you should get style points for getting 100 km out of the original Delrin Simplex Prestige derailleur ensemble - and maybe bonus points if the shifters are intact at the end!

I have so much stuff in my stash that's been there for ages and I don't maintain records meticulous enough to recall when or where I even got it - let alone how much it cost. This has been my primary obstacle to participating across multiple years (that, plus having rotten luck at coming across sub $70.00 Paramounts). This said, I am determined to do SOMETHING this year - even if the bicycle is a poor fit.

There have been mighty blows with hammers and mallets, long bit drills (but maybe not long or big enough), lubricants and caustics applied, but I don’t think I’ve done that technique with the socket. I’ll look into that. It’s a long shaft stem, which complicates things as there’s a lot stuck in there.

This is a tempting clunker, but I think it is too new (thankfully). $50.00

It's like everyone has their own personal BOC--just that some of that parts happen to be currently hung on old bikes.

- Swapping one part out for another does not cancel out the value added to the bicycle. As found = purchase price. adding items costs money unless you sell the old ones.

QUOTE]

This a great idea for those of us who love to tinker almost more than we ride! Oops did I give myself away?

Anyway a question on the above statement. I take it that items I have as left overs in my parts bin are not allowed onto the bike with out adding to the cost of the project? That is, if I add a seat I have laying around, I have to add fair market value of that seat to the overall cost of the clunker?

So in theory, one could barter one's project up to higher level so long as only $108 was originally spent?

This is definitely a challenge in my neck of the woods where seemingly worthless bikes go for way too much.... But that is what a challenge it is, is it not?

Just for yuks, here is a possible contender in my area...

I see a candidate for the CC about once per month. Otherwise, lately everything has been $125 or more, other than kids bikes, newer Walmart MTBs and cruisers.
