Keep getting dropped

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm still skeptical if any of this is for real, but if it is, you need to realize skin cancer, especially around here (Bay Area) is a huge problem. Don't take this risk.

I wear long-sleeve summer (cool) jerseys. They actually keep me cooler than short sleeve ones or arm protectors.

no shirt would keep you cooler than all of that, and since i commute 5 days a week most of my riding is not done when the sun is harsh.

Not if it is reflective. Good to avoid peak UV (about 1pm here).

We’ve turned them away from our rides multiple times. Honestly, I think they’re both afraid of getting dropped, so they show up without shirts and helmets to avoid any chance of embarrassment out on the road.

I do both and before each ride the ride leader lets everyone know the rules of the ride. I don't mind rides with a regroup but prefer not. on rural routes my group of friends try to never let one rider ride alone, safety in numbers kind of thing.

Reputable brand bike-specific wear would actually feel colder on the skin than without, especially the brightly colored ones. Closely-fitting ones would even be better as long as it's not too tight that they actually start blocking the sweat pores.

The cheapest reputable bike wear brands I think is Rock Bros and Fox.

Eventually, we'll have spider silk wear and they can even provide cooling like a heat sink, even if you don't sweat. They'd be the ultimate summer sports wear but unfortunately, I'd bet they'll be super expensive only few will bother to buy until the Chinese knockoffs becomes available.

I can confirm that every time I've seen him, he's been shirtless.

I can also confirm about skin cancer in the Bay Area, having had a Melanoma In Situ removed from my right thigh 13 years ago.

Me too. I'm an inch taller than he is and 52 pounds heavier. When I was 35 and first joined the road club I was about 75 pounds heavier than he is.
My friend is about his size and weight. He can wear a small tee shirt. Tiny shoulders and frame he was always a great climber but he's around 77 or 78 now.

I haven't worn a shirt while running in many years (other than shop jersey while racing), but... running is much shorter than cycling, and finished with the sun much lower. "Getting used" to a red back sounds like poor life choices.

I think the key to not being dropped is to become part of the group. To show up at the start of the rides, learn some names, learn how to ride close without being squirrelly, and to become part of whatever 'peloton' or 'breakaway' that you are in at the moment. Tell 'em "My name's Larry, but you can call me Fred", with a smile. You take so much abuse around here it's surprising that you remain so good-natured. I'm sure you can find a group that will accept you as you are, if you are actually trying to ride smoothly and courteously, and ride like a teammate, instead of a random competitor.

I used to think that riding without a shirt was kinda rude, but now that I'm 64, I do it myself. "All the more reason", I can hear the murmuring...

Just being yourself was OK, in the seventies at least, and may become OK again.

I’m not surprised by this. You seem like a nice enough guy.

I’m also not surprised that some of the groups don’t welcome you, as you’re inclined to do some goofy stuff at times.
