I had a derailleur cable break on a ride after going too long between replacing it.

Ever since then... well first of all, I've been better about maintaining my cables. But I also carry a few zip ties in my saddle bag so that if a cable breaks again, I can rig it up like this:

Thanks for the zip tie info. Very ingenious ! I will carry zip ties in my saddle bag now too.

Can't say I've had any cable issues with my Shimano 105 R7000 over 14,000 kms from new. I had the shop check it over recently and they said it was fine. Only housing they had to replace was the final loop going into the rear mech (which was cracked). From the electronic data on my other bike I average around 300 shifts per 50 km riding, so it gets plenty of use. My mtbs are lower mileage, but haven't replaced cables/housings in the last 3 years. I guess I'm really not too hard on my shifters!

We are all grown-ups and can figure out from our own riding experience how often our bikes actually require cable maintenance. I must admit I'm sold on electronic shifting at this point.

This can't be true. Cxwrench says they fall apart and break at least once maybe twice per year. And it's all of them!!!

It obviously varies with user and environment. I'm aware of the Shimano brifter cable issue, but never experienced it personally. But I would say I'm pretty easy on my drivetrains. I don't shift under load and rarely ride in the wet or winter conditions. I've never had a cable failure at the roadside in the last 30+ years. I did more regularly change cables/housings on my mtbs when I rode through the winter months in all weathers. Maybe every year or so back then. But never that often with my road bikes. Going forward I'm going electronic on all my future drivetrains, so cables will soon be history for me.

Reading comprehension. It's all about reading comprehension. I said it happens to all sti shifters. I did NOT say it happens to every sti shifter.

Ok, because you're gonna be like that I'll clarify: It happens to all types and models of Shimano sti shifter...it doesn't happen to every shifter they've made.
