Yesterday's club ride took us down to Jug Bay on the Patuxent River at Mount Calvert. There's been human habitation at this spot for about a thousand years.

My sweetie and I took ye ol' Peugeot tandem out today, rode from home out to Carlisle for lunch, took a few non-linear turns, ended up with 48.3 miles. The temperature was, um, 44degF when we started, what you might call cool. Very November.
First photo op, Samuel Wilson, a.k.a. Uncle Sam who provided provisions for the US army for some years, born in what is now Arlington, MA but was then called Menotomy.
A few more photo ops, of course.
One more of my favorite photo subject, my sweetie.
Today's ride was notable for a number of encounters. We stopped at the Lexington Visitors Center and I noted a pair of bikes and their riders, a Trek and an ANT. So I asked the couple wearing bike helmets sitting there which one rode the ANT and the woman said "I do but he built it." Cool! It turns out he now works for Seven. They commented as how it was hard to run a small business and compete with the big factories in Taiwan. They also commented on the tandem, particularly the nifty biplane fork crown, and we talked about the bike's history for a few minutes.
Later in the day on our return we were passed by three cyclists decked out in the usual roadie trappings and riding CF (of course) and the guy in back slowed and complimented the tandem. Traffic and other stuff caused us all to stop for a moment. While stopped he even asked about the Mafac brakes and how the drum brake worked. He hadn't noticed the two cables coming off the right-hand lever.
That qualifies as a great bike-got-noticed/vintage-bike day. The ride was pretty special too!

I rode a little 12.5 mile loop that I take when I have other things that I should do (think clearing gutters and raking leaves). Wonderful temps around here and a few spotty showers early. After the chores I took the High Sierra out for a spin. I forgot to take photos until partway through.

Had an old school steel-is-real bike ride today. Took in some of the majesty of some mid-Atlantic fall color (although we're just slightly past peak here). This is at Shenandoah University's Cool Spring campus, a property sitting on a Civil War battlefield (Battle of Cool Spring). There was once a golf course here, and SU is returning the property back to nature (reforesting the fairways, etc), but maintains the cart paths and property as a nature preserve. Wonderful weather to enjoy a crisp Sunday afternoon in early November.

@dweenk, @hokiefyd, very nice pics!
We took our tandem out again today but with lowered intent compared to yesterday, did only 28.5 miles.
Lunch in Concord:
A trio of riders on CF Cannondales (which didn't asplode while we watched them) had ridden up to that corner and stopped for water and conversation. As we were mounting the bike to head back home they joked about riding a triple, then asked about the bike, how far we were going, whether we ever swapped roles (Are you kidding? We wouldn't fit each other's positions!), that sort of thing. Old steel still carries some cachet.

Yesterday I rode a 20-mile loop I call the Island Hopper - Manhattan, Randall's/Wards Island, Long Island and Roosevelt Island. New York is a city of bridges, I crossed 4 of them on this ride.
Here's the Hell Gate Rail bridge and the Triboro Bridge in the background, from Astoria:
Roosevelt Island has great views of the east side of Manhattan. At the northernmost point is a little lighthouse and a view of Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan:
I took a 360-degree panorama that is here on Google Maps.

@Narhay - Beautiful bike. We've been getting a really stunning autumn - was that ride out to Iona Beach?
Speaking of great weather... after getting our first snowfall in Vancouver yesterday-coming down (though not sticking) even at lower elevations-I couldn't ignore the sunshine on offer this morning and headed out on a solo ride to Steveston Village. Snow Geese are currently arriving in droves in their migration from Siberia.
Richmond BC has a beautiful gravel mixed use path that takes you all along the wetlands and riverside
Took the requisite glamour shot of the Centurion Pro Tour. The fresh dusting of snow on the mountains looked especially beautiful today!
... the same trail also takes one past a small cattle farm
I stopped in the village to warm up with a fresh bubble waffle and a hot coffee. At about 5-6 degrees Celsius (low 40's F) I'm glad I opted to wear an extra layer of wool on my feet and on my body!
While I'd say we've passed the peak of fall colours this week, there are still a number of bright reds and yellows on display.

I figured that yesterday was as good a day as any to utilize the fender-equipped Super Course for a long ride. I rode the Rail Trail from the Bronx up to its culmination in Brewster, NY for a 54 mile ride. There were hardly any other folks out there and the colors were vivid, the air warm and the rain light but steady. I had a quick coffee and egg sandwich at a deli near the end of the trail then caught the train home.

Thank you all for the great photos, mostly of places I've never been! This thread is my travelogue.
Fall here in California brings the end of our 5 month dry season. The trails are littered with dry oak leaves and their acorns which ripened a month or more ago.
These thistles will soon be beaten down by the winter rains and winds, to be replaced in the spring by the next generation of thistles.
Even the Olema Marsh is more brown than green this late in the season. The far hills have been dry brown since late June.
I picked up this hitch-hiker on the path down to my house. Soon all the dry leaves will be damp and decomposing and we will welcome the return of the rain, the mushrooms, and the Salmon.

Brent, where in the Bay Area do you live? I used to live in Morgan Hill many years ago, and the hills in your photos are very reminiscent of my time there. Thanks for the pics.

I rode along the bottom lands where the pumping stations are located. In my delinquent days, my high school guidance councilor would have said that was where I belonged. Now she is dead; I am still alive and riding bikes, and far from delinquent.
By the way, it is the coldest day of fall around here with a 25mph wind from the northwest. Numb hands,so the photos may show that (again on the High Sierra).
