I was surprised how nice the pavement is the entire way. Another week or two and leaves will start being an issue. I think I'm definitely going to make it an annual ride.

This morning, despite the cold weather (it was 41° F), Jonathan and I decided to go for our usual Friday ride. We have made a commitment to continue our rides into the fall and through the winter to the extent possible, and we both have been buying winter riding gear. For today's ride, I led Jonathan on the route I took last Saturday which took us further east through the Middletown Valley allowing for some different panoramas than we get by staying on the western edge of the valley. Over the ride, we covered 31 miles and had over 1,800 feet of climbing. Tomorrow, we (my wife and I) plan to take the Bilenky on that same ride. I can promise you we won't conquer the route at the same rate we did on today's ride.

Today was my last ride for 8 to 12 months "having surgery" so took my time and savored it. It was a perfect spring day for it being sunny with no wind.
But wait my rehab at some time will involve my vintage 80's stationary trainer I bought 2 weeks ago. I've already fitted the full compliment of Campy Record with 3ttt bars/stem and Concor saddle, I can show pic's of me on that
Keep me occupied with the usual great pictures everyone.

I posted this in "everyday pics" yesterday by mistake, so here it is again in the right place. BTW, Santa Barbara arguably has the best year round riding on the planet, road or off-road. Tons of different flat rides or climb from the beach 4000' to La Cumbra Peak in the mtns behind SB.

These are a few pics from my standard ride in the foothills behind Santa Barbara. I was lucky, my 24 yr old son Wylie who (rides about 20% as much as me but can drop me easily, but he's kind and hardly ever feels the need; damn those youngsters!) was in town and joined me riding his late 70s Colnago(got from a curbside freebie pile about 15 years ago but that's another story).

Ride starts by climbing up Mission Ridge Rd behind SB, pics of road and view from same, SB harbor and Channel Islands about 30 miles across the Pacific. Next few are from Mountain Dr which pretty much stays at the same altitude of about 1000'(a really fun road, lots of turns, about zero traffic, great views) then looking down coast from the road. Last two are Cold Springs Canyon creek(and trailhead for the canyon, parked cars are hiker's)), my usual turn around point, and Wylie and me.

PS If you ever plan to be in SB with your bike pm me ahead of time and we can plan to go for a ride.

A little 30 mile ride with my 14 yr old son on the Pinellas Trail, St Petersburg up to Largo and back. He on his 86 Team Fuji, and myself on my 87 Bridgestone (PINK of course for Breast Cancer awareness!) Cooler and a bit dryer but VERY windy out there today.

Thanks jbc, but I doubt there's any chance of me turning pro soon. I don't pay too much attention to fuel prices since I don't drive too much. When we need to travel any distance, we try to take our VW Golf TDI which gets around 45+ MPG highway. It eases the pain of high fuel prices considerably...

Best wishes on your surgery. We'll be looking for some pics of you on the trainer.

Today, our original plan of riding to Middletown and then onward to Jefferson didn't pan out due to time constraints, so we just rode our Bilenky tandem to Jefferson and back. It was not a very long ride, but was a strenuous ride with a couple of pretty long grades that we needed to climb in both directions. Unfortunately, the GPS wigged out in the middle of the ride, so I didn't get any good stats for the ride. Such is life...

I rode 51 miles today after it stopped raining this morning. It was warmer at 65 and I over dressed a little bit. I had to content with a stiff 20mph wind throughout the ride.

Those photos always start looking cold this time of year. Today was opening day of the winter riding season here. My first (comfortable) daytime ride since before Easter. I rode up to the north coast and back, with second breakfast and bird watching in the middle. I met some Canadians, over breakfast, who had apparently just arrived for the winter. They were going on about the heat, while I was remarking at what a beautiful, cool day it was. Birdwise, it was a 3 road runner day, a personal best. 88 kim/55 mi. round trip. No photos, as my wife took the camera with her to Belize.

After being skunked last weekend in terms of outdoor riding, I took the afternoon off to get a 50 mile ride in. Down to Afton then through Lake Elmo to the Gateway Trail, then up from the Mississippi home. Much of it was on the gateway trail, a mostly flat paved rail trail. Too much stop and go once you get into town, but still a great way to travel (and sure beats work).

Wow some of you of you guys seem to live out some magical place with wonderful scenery.. living in the middle of a city I don't see much of that. Today I went for a 15 mile ride cruise on my newly built up Univega Alpina.. had lots of fun around town and on the MUP along Guadelupe river. They've paved big sections of this path now, turning it into a major bikeway. There's some areas where you can do some light offroading and stuff.. pretty much the only thing close to "mountain biking" within 5 miles of my house

Was so stoked today - the state forest by us was finally reopened after a 6 week closure due to wildfires. It rained heavily on Sunday and Monday which helped remove the restrictions. Took my shorter 17 mile loop through an area where the elk have their calves in the spring because I was concerned the fire might have gotten to it. The good news is that it didn't - however it came within a half mile which means my upper (aka climbing) loop will be partially through the burned area which is too bad. The estimated burned area was something above 40,000 acres on our side of the ridge and another 35,000 to 40,000 on the other side.

With colors beginning to change it makes it even that much better of a ride:



This is such a peaceful, quiet road. I'll often stop and just listen to nature for awhile

I wanted to do my bike commute this morning but for several reasons opted to just drive all the way to work. Since the bike was in the car the alternative was to ride after work, which is exactly what I did. Only 13 miles on the Blackstone Bikeway from rt116 to Woonsocket and back. The return half was run with my generator lights aglow, burning a hole through the gathering darkness.

It was marvelous.

Legs were wobbly n sore after yesterdays trail run so today I went out after work and rode real easy like around the upper valley for a couple of hours. Mt. Si dominates the valley so here's another picture of that hunk of rock
