Yep. I've been back on the bike for almost 2 years after being off it for 15. I'll never find the fitness I had in my early-30s, but I'm enjoying feeling good on the bike again.

I've come across a couple of sections where I've needed to hike a bit, but those have become less as my strength has developed. I also tend to pick routes where I know I can ride as much as possible. I turned 53 last week. I'm not exactly in my prime - LOL

Did 30 miles last night with my regular DTLA group ride all the way towards La Cañada Flintridge and back. One guy had a flat near Figueroa, so a few of us stuck around while he changed out his tube. After that was done, the main group already had a 7 mile lead on us, so we hauled ass in a bike train to catch up to their location near the Arroyo Seco Bridge (aka Suicide Bridge). We were able to close the gap within 10-15 minutes, so we were going pretty fast. They always say it's a chill ride, but whenever the fast riders pick up the pace, it's hard not to do the same! One guy crashed behind me on the return ride, but luckily only a few scratches and a bruised ego!
This whole month, all our rides are by haunted locations. Apparently there's a dead worker embedded in the concrete of the Arroyo Seco Bridge, not to mention the large amounts of suicides off the bridge. We also rode to Devil's Gate Dam which was a meeting spot with occultist activity connected to JPL and Caltech!

Did 20 miles of flats, fast descents and hill climbing yesterday with my riding buddies. Nothing beats sweating it out after a previous night of drinking and partying!

27 miles tonight riding from Highland Park to DTLA and back for our Tuesday night group ride! I rode my alloy gravel bike tonight while my other bike is having the wheels trued at the LBS. At first the extra weight over my carbon bike was noticeable, but after riding for a few minutes my body acclimated to the weight. I also added some old, beat up Ritchey clipless pedals I had laying around and amazingly they still felt pretty good for being about 23 years old!

is finally adding (back) that early 4am train from san diego up to union station up in la. that 4am
train had been cut for the last 1.5 years with everything that's been going on. la > sd century time.
big difference starting the ride at 7am from union station vs 9am. this is effective monday, october 25th.
perhaps some of your other fave times/routes have been added back on amtrak.

Took the morning to putter around the Whittier Hills on the 29er.
Partly cloudy in the low 70's. Turnbill Cyn was busy with MTB's and Roadie as usual for a Saturday.

Yesterday, Saturday Oct 9, 2021 I rode in Huntington Beach where I live.
I rode from the Pier to the SART on the MUP just to see what the real damage smells like.
Lots of clean up crew, I mean the professional guys. Lots of those trailers and "command post" type vehicles. Lots of supplies on pallets. Very few people on the beach sand. Lots of activity on the MUP, walkers, dog walkers, electric bikes, real bikes, rental bikes, etc.
Going south on the MUP, crowd thins out past Newland Avenue where the Edison plant is located on PCH.
Where are they dumping the HAZMAT? I saw several very large bins. I mean very large rectangular shaped covered bins. Must be specially for HAZMAT.
One rider was actually yelling at the workers. I mean unkind words, not in support to what they are doing, as if this clean up effort is a fake of some sort.
At the Pier area, there's the sitting area, I call the mini-concert concrete area. Something was going on with a talk of some sort to listeners who were seated.

Today I did a total of 27 miles today at CicLAvia. It was fun rolling through parts of DTLA that wouldn't normally be open to bikes in any friendly manner. There were PLENTY of cyclists out and it made me wonder if LA actually invested in decent cycling infrastructure, we'd actually have a really awesome bike city.
I met up with my weekly cycling group and like harden DTLA cyclists, we opted to go back into traffic as a group and ride fast on the regular streets with cars. It just felt more natural for us and it was interesting to see how everyone who rides regularly are more alert than the average weekend rider!

It feels like it's been a long time since I've done a decent road ride. I got in 30 miles of moderate tempo with a few mild efforts on a loop around the Pasadena area on Saturday. I don't generally enjoy solo road rides, but it was a beautiful afternoon. My fitness is definitely way down.

Arroyo Simi bike path
My wife and I took a leisurely ride from Madera Ave, along the Simi Valley Arroyo bike path, to the east end, then north a few blocks to Chuy's Mexican Beach bar for lunch and a beer, then returned the way we came.

took the amtrak up from old town-san diego and disembarked in fullerton. ended up riding to the san juan capistrano train station but the garmin died approx 5 miles before that. took the amtrak back to sd from sjc.

from that fullerton stop could also ride thru chino hills and carbon canyon to sart around green river and then to hb, a gravel bike would be recommended for this choice

didn’t touch pch or the sart. thought about doing a few miles of dirt on that skyline/scharbarum trail but did a few miles of it last time up there.

given the daylight hours, wanting to do a century and a semi-direct line to the train stations along the 5 freeway, opted to blow off the green river area for now.
will probably be more likely for me to train up to anaheim to hit it or drive up to lake matthews/corona area and plod along from the other side.
