I just picked up a 70's/80's Gazelle tandem for next to nothing (€55/$62) and will be restoring it a bit for some fun riding around town and for when friends from abroad come over to visit.

It's a classic 3-speed model with full chaincases and 90mm drum brakes and definitely needs some work which I will be posting about in the C&V forum in the 70's Gazelle Tandem thread.

Just about to begin the "real" riding in the Sierra Nevada. Hole in the Ground trail is a KILLER! Haven't ridden it in a while and it would destroy me today. Gotta get on the bike more so these kinds of rides are back within the realm of possibility!!!

This is a our current tandem. We set it up last year and have been riding it for over a year now.



Before the Ritchey Breakaway we rode Tom's very first tandem, built in his mother garage, in 1977, at the start of his career. When we picked up this frame, there was a stack of weird looking frames in the corner of his shop. Those were Tom's mountain bike frames.



That red Ritchey still is our favorite tandem frame. We would still be riding it if I could have installed disk brakes. The two rim calipers and lousy Atom drum brake was a marginal braking system that required looking far down the road.
A few years ago I bought an old Poliaghi tandem frame on eBay for $350 and assembled a Frankencycle from left over parts. There is enough clearance for fenders so we ride this bike when the roads are wet.



Finally, we sold the following tandem a few years ago but it was a fun part of our lives when our daughter was still at home.

This is our most recent tandem........a 2019 Co-Motion Carrera. We mostly use it for riding on our local roads and regional tandem group rides and rallies:

And, we had this Bob Brown bike built for us in 2010. It has become our travel tandem since purchasing the Carrera. This one has also had lots of upgrades since this photo was taken:



Our very first tandem was a Richardson that we purchased used in 1985 but, unfortunately, I don't have any photos. For the most part, though, it's in retirement. I may build it up again some day, but for now it's just a bare frame hanging in storage.

This is what we ride almost always now, a 2005 Comotion Speedster that we bought a few years ago from the original owners. We had decided that we wanted a coupled tandem and spent some time on a Calfee Dragonfly and a Santana Beyond, getting ready to order one or the other. But this bike came to my attention out of the blue, and even before making all the upgrades I wanted, we both thought it rode as nicely or better than anything we’d been on. We really like this bike.


The red bike is our first tandem bought new in 2006, a 2005 Trek T2000 that I’ve upgraded over the years. I’ve now outfitted it with fenders and we use it when the roads are wet. It still rides great.

I like how you changed the timing chain to a belt drive. That use case actually makes a lot of sense on older pre-belt frames!

This is my Chinook travel gravel family tandem. In one photo, it's set up for my 5'3" wife as stoker with a Weehoo trailer in tow. In the other, it's set up for my 3'6" 5 year old stoking.

2019 Co-Motion Carrera. The biggest change from our earlier tandems is Di2 shifting. Our other tandems - a 1998 Santana Sovereign and a 2000 Bilenky (with couplers) - gave us many good miles and years and are now doing the same for their new owners.

It’s a pretty easy upgrade, about $250 in parts, as long as the distance between bottom brackets is compatible with the available parts. I did it initially to keep the left side of the bike cleaner for transport inside the car, but it’s also nicer from a maintenance standpoint and saves a small amount of weight.

Yeah, since we've been riding our Co-Mo Carrera for well over a year now, I've become quite familiar with the benefits of the Gates belt. I especially enjoy how clean it is as well as needing very little adjustment. Needless to say, I'm sold on it! Since I'm also in the process of doing a few minor upgrades to our Bob Brown tandem, it just makes sense to go this route on that bike as well. I just need to be certain that it'll fit before pulling the trigger on it.

EDIT: Since we currently have a da Vinci direct drive timing chain setup on the BB bike, I'll need a pair of new spiders in addition to the Gates belt and rings if I want to do this conversion. It might end up being a tad expensive.

Finally got around to buying a KHS Tandemania Comp in 2000.

Here's the first iteration of "the Double-Double", as I called it.


Trek T1000 with kidback stoker, tandem trail-a-bike no pedaling. Lead trail-tandem child pedals are aligned and zip tied to be footrests. Caboose position had a rack-post to allow child seat with full harness.

This evolved through eldest child as Rear Captain, shifting gears for two girls pedaling, and son on the kidback. At that point the total weight was making things unsteady, even by the standards I had gotten used to.

It was always kind of a novelty thing, but being able to ride 15 miles to the park with three kids and a picnic, doze under a tree while the kids played on the climbing structure, and take the short 7 miles home with happy exhausted children really saved my sanity a few weekends.

Now eldest does 25mile/2.5kft rides with me, and is pretty gracious about this being the summer she can beat me up hills. She's asking about how far she can go by herself, too.

I still have the tandem. It's time to take the kidback off it and take one of the younger kids with me on some medium rides, see if I can spark that interest.

Our 1987? Burley Duet. We made a post late last year on Tandem@Hobbes asking if anyone had a cheap tandem fixer-upper, since we were just looking to get into the hobby and didn’t know how we’d like it. An older couple replied and gave us one for free—AND threw in another Burley tandem for good measure (which we gave to some friends)! We were gobsmacked.

I fixed the bike up, and we love it and ride it often. We’re set to go on our first ride with the couple who gave it to us later this month (since corona got in the way).

The whole story probably deserves its own post. It was crazy in the best way.

This is our 5th tandem which was purchased from Tandems East. It is a Co-Motion Speedster which we've had for about 5 years it was build just before they switched to the open frame design for the Speedster. This is our "sport about" tandem which is currently on main tandem.


This one is our 4th tandem which we've had for about 10 years. It is a Bushnell which we purchased from Tandems East. It just got home Saturday from Tandems East where we updated the gearing for touring, going with 48/36/24 chain-rings which will help us get up hills when we do our tour of the west coast next year. We have a drum brake and 11-34 cog-set for the tour along with a B.O.B. trailer.

our Gepida e tandem. we spent our stimulus money on it. neither one of us drive and we did not want to ride public transportation so this worked we ride every day now after my commute. and yes we get a workout.

2019 Schwinn Twinn tandem somewhat upgraded.

Just over 9 feet tall.

Paul, 40mm Schwalbe Marathons. The GAP is extremely well maintained, we could have easily done it on 28mm road tires. Saw some singles on 23mm racing tires.

However, we did the GAP along with the C&O Canal trail, which is very rough in places, and often poorly maintained. The 40 mm Schwalbes we’re good for that, and I wouldn’t do it with narrower tires if I had the option.
