Roll the dice, take your chances. You never know if the owner of the bike you're stealing is a lunatic.
I make it clear with a sticker on my bike: "If you try to steal my bike, I'll kick your face in." It is not a cutesy joke.
When I was a courier many many moons ago, a guy from another service caught someone trying to jack his ride, knocked him out, and locked him to a parking meter.

Good post, and thanks for sharing.
The owner of the bike practices what I do all the time. The only time my bikes have locks on them, is when I am eyeballing close by. However, the owner of this bike was using the eyeball but didn't lock the bike. IMO, that is almost asking for somebody to pick it up. I have a couple cheap combination cables that I use. I can put them on fast, and take them off fast. That keeps somebody from just grabbing and running. Suppose the thief had jumped on the bike and started pedaling fast? He might have gotten away.
On the beating, IMO, the thief got everything he deserved. IMO again, the thief is lucky he didn't get killed.
Kudos to the biker..

I wouldn't say he got what he deserved (unless he attacked the bike's owner when tackled by him), but at the same time he can't have any complaints. If you go around stealing people's possessions you shouldn't be surprised if they get angry as a result.

I don't know - I can understand the impulse, but I feel like this looks a little excessive. Can you imagine the number of blows required to make the guy's face look like that?

Awesome!! I can't stop the LOLS!
Excessive? No way. Excessive would be death. Keith Kirk received what he deserved. It could have been worse for Kirk...
Kirky boy got f***** up and it is beautiful. Kirk is not the victim here. He stole something that doesn't belong to him. If you steal somebody's transportation you are f****** up someone's livelihood who depends on that bicycle to get to their jobs, support themselves and their families, pay taxes. All things Kirk the bottom feeder doesn't do. Calvin McDougal did a most excellent job of teaching Kirk a lesson in street justice! Who here thinks Kirk will go out and steal another bicycle?
$600 bicycle...a blow for every $5? Sounds fair!
Not everyone has such wealthy ladies in their lives --- can we share yours?

I agree the extent of the beating was probably excessive (unless it was a two-way fight - we haven't seen what the other guy looks like), but I can't really blame the cyclist. When I had my lights stolen last year I felt like tracking the thief down and beating him to death with my u-lock. If something as trivial as a $20 set of lights could make me that irrationally furious, I don't even want to imagine how out of my mind with rage having my whole bike stolen would make me. I can't honestly say that I'd have been able to control myself either if I'd been in the bike owner's shoes.

One to break his nose.
One each to the eyes. Left eye looks like he took a couple knuckles above the bridge to create that cut, and a good clean one to the socket.
No split lip or missing teeth, doesn't look like he was hit in the lower face at all.

I object to them calling a $600 bike expensive. If they only knew.

Excessive would have been stomping him after he was down. Only a few little love taps to make him look he does in the photo. Real fights are not what you see on tv.

Having one's bike stolen is not just about the cost. It causes extreme inconvenience in some cases. In rare cases could be critical, or even fatal. The bike is a tool, not diamond jewelry. What does the thief in the following case deserve?
The most heartless bike thief ever: Double amputee who hoped to ride across U.S. has his $13,000 custom cycle stolen on eve of journey

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Although I am not in Clifton's league or weight class, my experience has been that most folks have not wanted me to hit them twice... if they were given an option. Have also found most folks can't hit worth spit but then I spent a lot of time working on developing skills.
It may go against the liberal pacifist agenda but I am also with Clif... if I catch you stealing my bike there is going to be an ass kicking and you will probably find your head shackled to a post.

IMO, if he came away with what he got and two broken arms and legs, I still wouldn't call it excessive.. In fact, I think the bike owner after he finished working him over, should have broke both his legs too. I am almost quite sure, that he will not try to steal a bike again.

You really think that's excessive? What I think is excessive is that most thieves steal let's say 10 bikes (or whatever, before they get caught), and they seem to get caught 3 or four times before the courts take it seriously and start to hand out some punishment that fits the crime... There is some excessive leniency happening there... JMO
