Shimano pedals, which one? XT trail vs. 647 vs. 545?
I am looking for new pedals for general trail riding, not racing. The bike is Giant Anthem, and I won't be doing any 3' drop off or jump. But I would ride the bike to the store once in a while as well.
I had a 545 before and that worked well. Now Shimano offers XT trail pedals with a cage, and a 647 DX that seems to have a bigger plate form than the 545 at a similar weight (according the web site).
I wonder if the XT trail's cage is good enough for general ride without clipping in or with "regular" shoes (for store runs). Or 545 / 647 would be more suitable as all purpose pedals?

XT Trail are ment for momentary use, when you miss a lock in, and to help with glancing blows over rocks...
545 vs 647, I dunno. Don't look much different other than materials.

Shimano Deore XT Mountain pedal
PD-M785

The platform Is every thing to me as I jump off and on In roots and corners often.

They grip my mountain bike shoes that have deep treads.
But I think they'd be a little slick on a worn down tennis shoe..
I often pedal out of a sticky situation before I clip in..

I have some of those Shimano platformy pedals, and I don't find the cage part to be of any use. Since the pedal is higher than the cage, when I'm unclipped, I'm just balancing on the high part of the pedal. I tried a 10 mile road ride with these pedals and regular sandals, and it was pretty uncomfortable.
I like the plain Jane Shimano M520L pedals. They're something like $25 from Nashbar (just checked, actually $21.89)

Buddy has the XT Trail and with regular tennis shoes he has the occasional slip of the foot. I think if you are considering using regularly to go to the store, then maybe stick to 545 for $65 or 647 for $80 (but lighter than 545).

None of those pedals are designed to be used without being clipped in. If you ride down the street to do a beer run fine...but if you actually try and ride the trail...your shoe will slip off and you will wreck.
