My bike was assaulted.

My bike was assaulted.
At least that's my best theory.
As reported in 'Weekend rides' thread, I parked my bike around the corner of the country store,
& it was laying on the ground 15 or 20 mins later. Didn't think anything of it, but saw the damage while
uploading pics (I was trying to get a picture of my socks). The blow came from the top, so I don't see
how it could have happened from the bike simply falling over.
Anyway, now what? Got things dialed, so not in a hurry to upgrade. It's a 2007 S works Tarmac, but NOS in 2013. Doesn't sound bad tapping on the tube.
Options:
- Put some tape on it.
- Strip the frame down & send it off to Ruckus
- Buy a replacement frame i.e. used 2017 S Works for $1800- local
- Get some exotically hip new bike

Is the OP taking selfies of his feet while riding? Maybe he ran over the bike with his car while texting and didn't notice...

Thanks for the input.
It's a structural crack, kind a a cross, & one side pushed in slightly, about 2"x1 1/2".
I'll ride it this weekend- don't think there is a risk of immediate failure, but crack could progress, & another blow to the same spot would be bad.
The S Works frame does go with those socks....

If you plan on having it repaired, I would not recommend riding it as is.

Have you taken the bike to a LBS for their opinion?

Agree, if you can SEE structural deformation DO NOT ride that bike.
Sucks to lose a nice frame that way. I best it would be an easy fix for one of the many repair sites.

Tomorrow's ride is 125 miles. If the frame was going to fail & ruin my teeth
it would involve the cracks getting bigger, right?
I taped over the damage- 2 1/4"x1 1/4" & if the cracks get bigger then they would show beyond the tape.
If you don't hear a report in a day or so, then fear the worst, but otherwise it should be a nice day out there.

Every time I think I need a carbon frame, I see something like this.
(It isn't so much carbon per se, but my propensity to break stuff.)

Ruin your teeth? That's totally unnecessary. You ride on carbon fiber and you don't wear one of these? Tsk, tsk.

like all the others have said, taking out your current rig for a long ride is not a good idea. Sit this one out, it is not worth the risk.
This is more reason why you need a back up rig. Get the S-Works. The neon is really flashy.
Fix the crack and rebuilt it as your back up bike.

If it was me I wouldn't chance riding with that kind of damage imo.Im a scaredy cat when it comes to a carbon fiber frame.I hear that when they give it sounds like a small explosion and happens so fast that you won't know what happened until you make an abrupt stop into something unmovable.OUCH!!

Woodcraft, I'm curious . . . what "country store?"
I was doing the forensics on this and thought . . . would it be a country store on a route used by motorcyclists? I'm thinking that that damage looks intentional; as though some disgruntled motorcyclist took a rock and swiped your top tube with it. I say this because I am a motorcyclist as well and I belong to a well-known, SF Bay area forum and, I have to say, The Spandexed are not much beloved on that site--in fact quite loathed by a few.
A theory!
On a more positive note, I also ride MTB. MTBers are used to riding with damage like that and worse on their CF steeds. It may not be the end of the world.

Valley Ford, on hwy 1.
The most likely suspects were a young teen-aged kid, & no-shirt guy w/ shiny pick up.
I don't find the motor cyclists too bad- the occasional close pass, but some waves & I think some grudging respect.
At the time I was talking w/ a BMW couple from San Jose. They gave me some jerky.
Worst are the younger local farm-boy yahoos in pick ups.
Thanks for the thoughts. Oh, I lived in Willow Creek for a time...
