20 miles in between errands and wrapping today.
You've heard of gravel grinding, but is kernel grinding the true future of road cycling?

Très Inspirant!
Some badly needed inspiration in the midst of our dreary winter season. As a matter of fact, I've just mentally moved my Grand Touring from 4th in the winter project queue to 3rd.
This is a bike I picked up locally for $60. I could ride it as-is; it doesn't really need anything. But as most of you know, that's not how I roll. This one is getting the Porteur treatment, with a large handlebar bag on a small front rack. Now all I need to do is find out where to get authentic French pain de boulangerie in my predominantly hispanic neighborhood...

We’ve had a lot of melting in the Boston area the last couple of days, which means it was time to put fenders and my winter wheel set on the Black Mountain. Got out for a quick afternoon ride with a friend on his Long Haul Trucker. Sorry for the lack of C&V content!

It was a nice day for December 25 (as in low 50's), so I decided to take the bike to the local wine shop to pick up a bottle for tonight's dinner. The round trip is about 6 miles through a mainly depressed and commercial neighborhood. The streets were quiet. That gave a few kids that had received bikes for Christmas good streets to ride.
We plan to have leftovers from yesterday's breakfast/brunch, sip wine, and watch old movies on DVD since Comcrap put TCM on the premium sports tier a few days ago.
Merry Christmas to all.

I got a quick one in on Christmas Eve.

Out n back on the Middle Fork Road, the recent rains made a mess of things at about milepost 9:

You could get around the road block and ride to the normal turn around spot

I had some hot tea and a snack at the bridge before realizing I was going to be late getting home for a dinner date with my wife.
OOPS!
I rode as fast as possible to get home and we were only 5 minutes late for our reservation.
Much to my relief, Robin was very forgiving about that.

Oh man! A Christmas day bike ride! Went down to check out the Lake. Then passed by Kevins house, mobbed with people.

Having nice winter weather on a day off, I took the opportunity to tour my favorite nearby riding spot. The University of Oregon offers seemingly endless routes, and byways... loops, dips, curves, and plenty of sights. With the students all gone for Christmas, there was plenty of care free riding to enjoy.

Finally dry enough to get out, but the temperature was 39 degrees. By the end of my ride I couldn't feel most of my toes, a disconcerting feeling. Plus it's hard to push hard when you can't feel one half of your foot (the part contacting the pedals, to boot!). Everything else stayed nice and warm, though, so it wasn't really a bad/cold ride. Just the foot thing.
I rode down to Juanita Bay Park, then went east to pick up the Cross Kirkland Connector. I took that to the end, then went across to Redmond via Northup Avenue and Bel-Red Road. Finished the return part of the loop by riding back along the Sammamish River Trail.
I had to take it a bit easy as the rough stuff seemingly loosened up two of the three bolts holding the big ring. Once I got back onto pavement I detected a metallic pinging noise which was the chain rubbing against the big ring due to the play. I finger-tightened them and took it easy on the way home. They don't use hex bolts but normal bolts and I didn't have the correct wrench with me. Maybe I should use some Loctite on these things! Anyway, here are some pics:

I managed to sneak out for an hour or so as well. Definitely unusual for Chicago on Christmas. I guess the average temp for December is going to be higher than November.

I saw a guy on Sheridan rd. riding in shorts and short sleeve jersey. It was warm, but not that warm.

Just under 29 miles today, upper 30's to 40°F. Low wind. Less ice in the Susquehanna today.

Took the Christmas green varsity to the beach today. With the warm weather in northeast Ohio, felt I’d better get out for a ride.

Temps were above freezing this morning, so I headed out for a 30-miler before the next wave of relatives arrived. I was on a maiden voyage for a new build: 1982 Holdsworth Special bought as a f&f from a BFer. I’ve set it up with 650b x 38mm wheels and a set of Retroshift brifters that I’ve had in the bin for years:

61 degrees in Chicago today (new record!) Average is 32 degrees. To celebrate, I rode 50 miles down to the south side.
Looking up Lake Shore Drive from 41st street. Yonder, you can see downtown.
Hopped on Drexel Blvd. in North Kenwood.
Once a grand boulevard, the area has gone through some changes. The area appears on the upswing, with restored mansions, mixed-income housing, and vacant lots.
Bernard Williams mural at the Houston Playground.
DescriptionThe Joe and Rika Mansueto Library designed by Helmut Jahn. Fun fact: I work in a Helmut Jahn building.
Next door is "The Reg" - Brutal!
The Robie House. At one point they were going to tear this down to build a dorm...
At the Phil Richman fountain. Bike could use a bath from all the winter road salt/grime.
Under the 57 street bridge. A freight was passing overhead while I took this.
Heading home on Berwyn (for the home slices).
