Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Edit: How is that RD mounted onto the frame? Is that 2 prong thing that looks like cable the RD bracket? Does it swing/move as well as the RD or is it stationary?

Thanks, not sure that the cover is available separately as its part of the Crestron integrated bar. As for the deraillieur, its just the direct mount hanger, it doesnt move and seems a great solution, pictured closer below. also a closer view of the integrated bar

haha, tell me about it, i placed the bike down with them aligned perfectly and then decided to move the bike back a foot or two for a better angle to take photo from the front and neglected to re-check it. I only noticed once I was back inside and had loaded the photos... schoolboy error.

I reckon a 90 degree stem would look great on the straight bladed fork (provided you could find a nice enough one that looks right). IMO the stem adapter is the missing piece of this mad update to that frameset.

Actually. I have this being delivered tomorrow. I need about 1cm more to be comfortable in the drops. I also think the ribbing will match the Gilco tubing. No way I could bring myself to put a threadless stem on it.

+1

Nothing ruins the appearance of a classic steel bike, faster than a threadless stem and a bunch of spacers.

Agreed, the pics I posted were pre test ride. I have since lowered the stem as far as that one I have on there will allow. the extra cm of a 130mm will give me the perfect reach. It's not just spacers, I think a fat threadless stem takes away from the sleek lines of vintage frame front ends.

Chiming in as I can't resist a discussion so near and dear...

It's aluminum but did you get a chance to see the Cannondale I posted a little bit ago? A full 50mm worth of spacers getting the bars up where they were with the stock quill stem. Gets positive comments from anyone who has bothered to comment, both online and in person. I can post it again if you can't find it.

The bigger sin to me on the Colnago is using black Campagnolo on classic steel rather than silver. Otherwise I love it. Wish I had one like it (but mine would be converted to threadless for obvious reasons).

They also make the handlebar/stem junction look clunky.

I haven't seen the Cannondale you mention, but they are a modern-ish looking bike. Threadless stems look right on modern bikes.

Now if @jadocs would just polish up his C-Record seatpost....

Ha I was just thinking about doing that last night but got caught up dremel-ing my extended T25 torx shaft to ensure I got it in all the way when I tightened the campagnolo rear derailleur. As suspected it was not so I didn’t get full purchase.

that should have been “too fat” lol.

Jack, I think you do great work and produce high quality parts, it's just not for me...on this frame. I had thought about selling the drivetrain that came with it to make back some money, but decided to keep the Record 8 speed groupset and Atlanta rims, knowing I can revert it back to original at anytime.

Have you polished any aluminum components previously? IIRC, C-Record seatposts and hubs are not silver anodized, so there's no need to strip it with oven cleaner.

I used this kit https://www.harborfreight.com/14-pie...kit-98707.html

and finished it up with.Blue Magic metal polish

Huh...I was just going to use elbow grease and some polish. Thanks for the links.

Edit: I have that exact polish sitting at home.

On that seatpost, elbow grease and Blue Magic might be enough. The Chorus crankset was silver anodized, and seriously scratched up, so it needed to be sanded first.

This girl spent 15 years sitting idle until I decided to get my fat ass back on the road last month. She's old, a bit heavy, and has some battle scars...pretty much like me. Dura-Ace 10-speed, FSA cranks/stem/seatpost, Shimano C50 wheels, Speedplay X pedals.

I have a tough time calling any bike with a skinny, curved-blade steel fork 'modern' but the chunkier tubes are a better match for a threadless stem here. That's 50mm of spacers under the stem FWIW.

Other than that huge stack of spacers, it's a good looking bike.

The headset is slick, but any bike with that many spacers(and very shallow drop bars) is gonna look a little wonky.

I like it.

Not really hot, but it was smoking hot in it’s day. Full CF hoops would heat things up.
