It’s a Police sting. I’ve seen something like this on Blue Bloods. They put a expensive looking bag one a park bench and wait for someone to grab it

I learn something new every day.
Note to self, give a hard pass to Cinelli or Birkin on park bench...pass go and collect 200.
Best, Ben

I did not call; seeing as I do not own a car and this is 20+ miles from my apartment facilitation would be difficult. But I can text tomorrow and get details...

Not knowing the owner and not having permission to post his phone number on the web I erred on the side of caution - I'm kind of old school about handling personal information (mine and others').

Best, Ben
Could it be a police sting? Perhaps, anything is possible.
The location* also suggests that this is legitimate and the seller knows he will get a lot of people who recognize what is offered and whether they are seriously interested without dealing with the tire kickers and bargain hunters that Craigslist tends to bring out.
* - upper middle-class residential neighborhood, high volume of cyclist traffic, and not a lot of places for police to sit without being spotted

no worries, that being said, if legit, the owner posted it in the public domain likely expecting it to be shared or should have.

1986 Schwinn Peloton $300. I hear these are often as good as Paramounts, would love to try one out. A cut above the Tempo, Premis, Prelude, etc. At first I thought they had painted over the chrome in the back, but i guess it's supposed to be that way?

Actually in France ... Grenoble (Isère).
Same seller also has an interesting RAVAT 650B routier that's not far from a proper period restoration.

And always the best prices, lots of bikes under $100. I'm not sure if the people there just want to get rid of stuff, or maybe the economy is so bad there, that $40 is considered a lot of money.

That Cannondale would easily go for $400 here.

The paint and panto looks a little amateur but maybe that's my less-trained eye.

regarding that Cinelli and it being a sting: do you think the police really want to devote that kind of time and effort over a bike thief in times like this?
i texted the seller this morning: the bike belonged to a friend that passed away. the seller was unsure of the exact size, only to say that it is LARGE (his caps), and his friend was around 6'2". i'm guessing the seller is not a bike guy, and perhaps is selling on behalf of the family.
i am simultaneously relieved and disappointed the bike is too large for me (eye-balling it maybe a 60cm? at least a 58cm); seller claims it is all original, it looks the case (and well cared for) and i didn't blink at the $2,000 asking price (though i really don't need to be spending frivolous money right now).
