FWIW, other features are; no mudguard (fender) eyelets, 'BIANCHI' stamped on the rear dropouts and singe brazed-on loops to guide the rear brake cable. Also has a chain hanger doofer on the drive-side seat stay and a beautifully minimalist stop brazed on for the rear mech cable on the chain stay. I'm new to all this but I find it fascinating...

Agreed, based on the previously mentioned features and now visusble others, such as the top tube brake tunnels, recessed mount brakes, short dropouts and cable routing under the BB shell, it's mid-1980s. The 26.2mm post size indicates a lightweight, hi-tensile steel used on entry level models,as does the lack of embossing apart from the dropouts. Consequently, the serial number indicates a 1984 model or, more likely, a 1985 model manufactured in late 1984.

In North America, such a model would have been manufactured in Japan and had the serial number stamped on the BB shell and used a different format. Even assuming mid range and Italian manufacture, the 1984 models had the serial numbers stamped on the seat lug, in two segments, while the 1985 models had the serial number stamped on the BB shell in two segments. The different location and format of the serial number on the subject bicycle suggests a different market, possibly European. It also suggests Italian manufacture, so it would be interesting to know if the BB is Italian or English threaded.

While the derailleurs and crankset are 1987-1989 Shimano New 105, the brake calipers are from the 1990s and it doesn't use the New 105 headset or pedals, suggesting it is mostly rebuilt. .

Most forums members, including myself, are North American based, complicating the identification of European models, other than to determine the year and level. However, as to uploading photos, you don't require 10 posts.

I'm in the UK and the BB is indeed Italian. Thanks for the other info - all nice to know. I'm still on the hunt for a list of 84/85 European models.

Thank-you. Your location and the BB threading were the two missing pieces of information. While the North American lower level models starting sourcing from Asia in the early 1980s, Italian built entry level models were still competitive in Europe due to the lower shipping costs.

I don't know if you'll ever be able to determine the exact model, as it was common practice to use the use one frame as the base for two or three different models. Once you've lost the OEM components, you've lost the items of distinction, Also, be aware that just having a European catalogue may not be good enough. Often, Bianchi model models, especially the entry level ones, differed from country to country, For instance, USA and Canadian models from this era and level were spec'd differently and even had different model names. Essentially, the importer spec'd the bicycle to local preferences.

All original campy but not record, mid level stuff. Found on CL for $200 but after so many hits, seller asked for $300. Seeing in person I felt it was still a great buy and had been on my wishlist for years.

Bought it and took her on a quick 15miler, very happy with ride quality but I live in a hilly area so I purchased a new campagnolo groupset for her, the potenza. Havent had the heart to tear into this beauty yet and am debating on weather I should ever.

Hi i just bought my first bianchi today and would be super happy to see someone help me identify the year. I actually found in an old catalogue the nuovo racing 84 - which looks very similar. But I'm not sure the piaggo 'sticker' is not visible. Further I would be super glad if someone feels ok to point out what I would need to upgrade or fix on the bike from your perspective. As you might tell I'm pretty new to the hole vintage racing bike universe. Thx so much in advance happy to provide more pics floopi
