Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I went ahead and bought some Continental Giro tubulars. Also some tubular tape, because my masochism has limits.

I've got some old tubular wheels that I need to clean. I've heard that a heat gun makes it a lot easier. I haven't tried it yet, though.

People, if you’re close to anyone, tell them you love them and give them a long hug, pandemic precautions permitting. My closest friend and old racing buddy just went on hospice care and I don’t think I’ll see him again. Actually, he would only hug LSS, but I’m going to miss him badly.

3 of us rode 50 miles today with 3000 feet of up. It was breezy and mid 50s and I rode the Gunnar to see how the drivetrain worked. Also I wanted to see if I feel less beat up than after riding the Seven, (I did).
I put a new chain on it and the middle ring was so bad it was noisy and the chain would hang off in a strange angle when in the large cogs. It's 6603 Ultegra and they are not available.

I ordered a regular 39 double ring from Jenson because it was on sale and I figured it would at least be good enough for me. The triple ring has big ramps built into it to help it shift up from the small ring. I got an e-mail from Jenson after 2 weeks saying they are processing my return order. WTF? I checked my credit card and they refunded part of the money. I wrote to them, couldn't get anyone on the phone, and they never said why it was returned. Eventually they said they would refund the rest of the money. A fiasco.

I started a thread in Bicycle Mechanics and a couple guys linked to stores that had 105 rings in stock. I hadn't considered 105 rings but people had them in stock. My LBS guy didn't have any but I wanted to see him before he retires next month so I went there on Thursday and saw an old crankset in the display case and it had a triple with a 39 on it. It didn't look exactly like the Ultegra ring but he gave it to me and it works. Happy ending!

Great ride tonight. 6 of us. I took a couple of 28 mph pulls. We were flying. Hit 30 mph at some point. I believe I might have stumbled onto some actual form. Got calf cramps in the final sprint. Had to back off. Mother of lard I felt good!

Didn't get the house. Realtor wants me to give up the contingency. Says that's why I didn't get it. They went with less money but immediate cash. Not sure I like that idea.

Very sorry to hear that about you friend.

Judging by the sea state and his calm look, it looks like he was a bad ass sailor. Respect!

He was a badass Navy fighter pilot and career officer and one of the best, most experienced, sailors I ever had the privilege to learn from. Mainly he’s a kind, gentle, humorous, generous, man.

I was sitting just out of the frame and thinking, what the hell am I doing here?

Sorry to hear Mo. When my bestie died something that helped me was staying in touch with his kids and his widow. Especially the (adult) kids calling me their "uncle".

New bike day. My boss is upgrading his MTB to an eMTB. So I got an older lightly ridden full squish MTB for free. Initial impression is that it feels cushy and the bushings in the pivots seem in good condition with no obvious play.
