Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I haven't even peeked into the mods area yet, not looking forward to reviewing a whole screen or more of trouble reports.

I know very little about varieties of dates, except that the Deglet Noor variety that were all there were when I was growing up are about the least interesting. I thought Medjools were best, till Mrs. GeneJockey and I happened upon a vendor at the San Francisco Farmers Market selling fresh Barhi dates - little round things, moist, with a flavor like maple syrup. But they don't keep.

I'm going to have to start using energy gels for long rides. I've been using real food for years (mostly Medjool Dates) because it's easier on my stomach, but I got Invisalign a few weeks ago and I can't chew foods with them in, and I'm not going to stop riding and take them out just to eat during a ride.

I ordered a sampler pack of Science in Sport gels. Any other suggestions for gels that don't throw your stomach into a fit? I've used GU and Clif in the past and I didn't have good experiences with them.

I've had bad experiences with most gels, my stomach gets very upset. For liquid fuel I have had good luck with Heed and Perpetuem. I've also used Cytomax with mixed results as well as powdered Gatorade.

Can't help you on the gels, but I did see something on a YouTube video recently. I think it was Tacoma Cyclist. He suggested getting one of those gel flasks and instead of an expensive gel, fill it with maple syrup. I haven't exactly tried that, but last week, I rode two Zwift races back to back (their Crit Crusher series) and I had only a few minutes, so I ran upstairs and drank a shotglass full of maple syrup. Worked like a charm, though I had already burned most of my matches in the first race.

I've done things like that before -- I experimented a lot with homemade gels and energy drinks and... well I'd just rather spend the extra money and not deal with all the fuss. The homemade gels especially make a huge mess. Probably operator error but hey.

Depends entirely on the cultivar.
