hello could anyone share any information or back story on this bike. I'm mainly interested in old wood rim racers and old pacing bikes. I'm not too versed on the newer stuff. I am somewhat familiar with the mad genius of pino morroni. there's got to be a story behind this bike. sometimes the stories are as interesting as the bikes.....thanks in advance

I've seen that style handlebar-to-forkcrown support only on Stayer bikes. Pretty wild.

yea, the bike has a stayer or pacing vibe, with the extra rear bracing, stem support, smaller front wheel, and clearance to run with the fork reversed... still looking for a backstory on this bike. anyone with any info, I'm sure it's traded hands a time or two....thanks

Oh my. I look at the stiffening elements and think that the builder expected a ton of power to be laid down, or, some riding surface irregularities that might cause impulse inputs at the hubs. Interesting.

Also the length of the rear stay openings suggests that substantial changes in gearing were anticipated.

Pino had definite ideas. I have seen some of these on other frames, this one has quite a number of them. The transverse tube eruptions in the main tubes are for stiffening torque tubes.
the added stays are interesting, would require A -B testing to decide on utility.
the long slots are not for gear accommodation but for his view that different tracks suggested different wheelbases.
the hubs are interesting- double ended threaded spokes- Magic would do this 15-20? Years later. Not shown are the probable nuts on the threaded spike nipples- wheel tensioned with the tire off, then the nut locks the spoke to provide support always.

Merckx used his ti stem for the Hour Record.
quite innovated there too, the steerer expander was buried deep in the quill. Shimano would use that concept ( albeit more complicated) on the AX stems.

thanks for the reply and info so far, some I already knew, some I didn't. interesting comment on the long rear drops to change wheelbase for different tracks. I would have never thought of that. still looking for info on this particular bike. there is and old Pic on classicrendevous of this bike

the real detail is the stuff inside - Pino made bottom brackets, quick releases and other components.

Looks like this bike has the Pino stem and seatpost.

Is that bike for sale or on offer somewhere ?

Not sure on the seatpost, the unit I saw way back was kind of klunky, of magnesium. the cinelli saddle rails were flat stock with a series of holes for adjustment, no micro adjust, unless I was missing something.
No telling what he did later.

I want to know if those are Pino hubs with the spoke hub ends cut and threaded into the flanges. Tough build? Wouldn't that be a be-atch to true? Or easier. I'm confused

On a track wheel set, wheels that are extra effort to service are not that outlandish.
Rarely did I need to true the track wheels up. Now, later when there was a mismatch in the surface between turn 3 & 4 at Encino, and Detroit...
Yeah more service.
Northbrook was smooth but a useless track for other than pursuiters, way too little banking.


The theory with the double ended threaded spokes was that the spoke at the bottom of the wheel would act as a thin column.

I believe the stem and hubs are pino, but not the seat post, although there's a pino seat post or two on ebay....it's my bike

I appreciate the observations and the information. I was hoping for yea that was my bike, what do you want to know, or so and so owned it and was raced in LA LA land. I like the old, old stuff and the history behind it, if I can tie an old racer to a previous owner it excites me, especially if the rider was of some note. I thought since this bike was only 35 40 years old and pretty distinctive it wouldn't be too hard. I realize most people have no idea of pino morroni, just like pop brennan or Joe kopsky. once again thanks for looking it was 16 pounds of cool innovation at the time

i havent tried cr, that's an idea but I doubt they would have a record of a year's old picture. tried the cabe, even face book, pino, telavio group which I thought was my best shot, no luck....thanks
