Wet Coast Rider

I've always wanted a bike with a Sturmey Archer 3 speed (or similar) hub. Obviously there are lots around still but I really want a "club" style racer and I've never found one in my size. Not being in Britain, I may have to build one up myself one day. I blame Sheldon Brown for this strange desire.

yep, I’ve wanted one as well. I picked up a 50s Claud Butler Jubilee. I have all the parts for a 2 x 5 build with more or less appropriate era parts but I’m tempted to build it as a club racer

I'd really like to get an Alan frameset in either carbon frame tubes and aluminium lugs or aluminium frame t ubes and lugs. I'd far prefer the carbon one though.

I’ve had many bikes come and go over the years and am very happy with what I have and ride currently. Still, I’ve never had a high-end Italian bike (a beat up 60s Legnano I set up as a city single speed doesn’t quite count). I’m not keen to ride skinny tires any longer so I’m not sure that curiosity will ever be satisfied.

I'd like to have a replica 7 Eleven Merckx in green, white, and red. Almost got one this summer but it was too far gone with rust for me to mess with.

Im the same. I like riding 32c tires so that rules out most Italian bikes. Plus the gearing is on the high side for my taste if you stick to campy stuff. It’s easier to retrofit an old French bike with hill worthy gearing and they tend to have decent clearance for a large volume tire. I picked up a mid 80s Pinarello cross though and it can take a 32c tire.

1984 Paramount Touring
I owned this Paramount Touring frame for a couple years before I accepted that it was way too big for me. I had it long enough to get hooked, so if I find another one in the right size, I'll do my best to grab it.

I'd also like to have something British, like Mercian, Bob Jackson, Jack Taylor, Falcon, etc.

Finally cheated and broke down over the winter and ordered a brand new Pashley Guv'nor. It's such a cool riding bike I wish I had did it earlier.

I have a nice Zunow, but it needs a top tube, a gugiefication Witcomb from England, a Roberts built Geoffrey Butler, a couple of Centurion Pro-tours. Too many Raleighs and other bikes that are recycles from Japan.
My Zunow is a great bike, I am a bit leery of having the top tube changed, will keep thinking on that one as it rides so nice. It is serial #298 so an early build.
My Witcomb is a great bike and really just needs a paint job. And then to be built and brought here to Cambodia. It is sweet and is a nice smooth ride for short or long times.
My Butler is a throw back 2x7 vintage ride. It is a great all around bike.
I really like my center pull Pro-tour and am trying to sell my 83. It is a truck but rides straight and smooth.


Would I take a nice Italian or French bike maybe if they were complete and in great shape, I really do not want odd threads or handedness.

I like French bikes because most are reasonably affordable and they ride nice.

When I started collecting bikes again in 2006, I chose mostly bikes that I liked but ones that i could sell at reasonable a price so that others could enjoy the pleasures of a C&V bike.

NO JUNK! Some with a little patina and NONE WITH RUST! If they were too pretty, I never rode them. The ones that I don't ride are going, going, gone!

what have I been on the lookout for?
a Gemini ( there was one this year in France but too big at 58cm ctt.)
a Harry Quinn ultra short wheelbase criterium bike- I had one way back, it was lots of fun, there were two others that were basically the same- so they are out there.
If an early, early Klein appeared in my size I would be tempted, I test rode one in 1975 and knew that was the future of a criterium race bike.
I Have missed my chances at a Masi Corsa and or an early Special, too spendy now.

Lots of French goodies. I think my favorites from the pics were the Tigra...super cool, the Peugeot PSV (thats the pearl color I lusted after in my youth) and the 1986 Bertin is nice.


England and USSR are my next two fills...I will probably need to build my bike shed/hideaway before then however.

I don't see myself buying too many more vintage. The only thing I'd like to find is a nice steel mtb with a lightweight tubeset, but my market is ridiculously high for anything that all the deals are in road bike which I have plenty of now.

Now near-Vintage (being defined as 25yrs old), I'd like to find a dedicated SS mtb, maybe an early bmx-spaced MonoCog. I'm always watching for any Airborne Ti models with the metal "A" headbadge, but need to find it close to $500. I'm also waiting to find deals on any of the higher-end fixies from the Great Track Bike boom of the early '00s.

My inner cheapskate still wants a Gitane Interclub for pure cussedness.

I think just 1 really, I'd like to have a Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross, the original that uses canti's. I plan on getting it next year after screwing up and not reacting when I should have this past year.

Custom lugged rambling frame by some of the wonderful builders listed elsewhere here would be fantastic too. I love most anything lugged 56 x 56 which there is plenty out there to find, it'd be cool to make a custom lugged unit with a tallish headtube but easier step over by the seatpost that rode like a 56 x 56. I do have Rheumatoid Arthritis and as I get older (I'm still youngish at 42), it is clearly going to get harder as the years go by to sling a leg over.

I'd love to edit an older frame too a la gugie and others here. I think that is awesome every time I see a 650B conversion or the like.

I'd love a modern hardtail too, but not clamoring for it.

I want an early 80s Miyata touring bike. I've wanted one since the early 80s when what I could afford was a hi-ten Takara.

Ironically I missed out on a nice Miyata a year or so ago because I didn't want to travel a couple of hours for it and I had just purchased another old bike. That other bike was a Takara Grand Touring.

KonAaron Snake offered up my grail bike for a very reasonable price...one of Steve Bauer's 7-Eleven team bikes. He's my cycling idol and we're the same age and size. Alas, it went to ebay when I couldn't scrape up the dosh. Missed opportunity.

I need a size 56 or 57 steel classic road racing or touring frame with 130mm rear spacing and clearance for 30 or 32 mm tires. I have these lovely 30mm Schwalbe tubulars which are rubbing on the brake bridge of the Cannondale Six13 I'm building.

That was mostly a joke. Though if it was 56cm, I would have left the joking to others and added past the Italian quota!!!!!

From my youth in the early to mid 1980s, I had just a few dream bikes honestly, that I lusted after. One was a 1983 Peugeot Competition (I got a 1987...I am satisfied once I paint and build it), a Columbine and Bruce Gordon (that ain't happening), and a Ciocc Mockba or soon thereafterward Ciocc. The gray anthracite was so un-Italian. Oh and a Bianchi Celeste of some ilk....I am mostly over that one.

Still hoping to happen on that one as a saved from the dump type deal (yeah right)!
