I'm a wide footed size 12 and the most comfortable pedal for me has been the Specialized Touring model from the 80s. They can be pricey when they pop up, but well worth it IMO.

I tried the Berthets, but they were too small/narrow. I think the pedal surface itself was fine, but the spindle too short and caused a lot of crank rub if I remember correctly. I've also tried the MKS Urban Platforms, twice, and I wasn't a fan of the tab to flip the pedal, it was always difficult to catch/grab it. It looks like MKS has a larger curve to it than the Berthet and the SP-11 so that could be why.

Previously posted in C & V, a Birmingham (UK) made John Perks tourer dating from the early 80s. A 531 frame & fork (2 and a half inch rake), Gipiemme dropouts, Prugnat S4 lugs with Wagner DP fork crown, Suntour transmission of Cyclone II derailleurs, 14-34 Perfect freewheel & Power levers. It has a nice Sakae Ringo 36/48 double chainset and Road Champion bars. Weinmann center pulls with Kool Stops and 27" rims on Maillard hubs take care of the stopping and going. Rides beautifully and is kept for sunny days.

Note also that the stem will need to be changed. French stems are 22.0mm. English/Italian are 22.2. The OG stem will rock in the steerer as you ride it.

I was always able to get french thread repair forks when I worked in repair BITD (20+ years ago). It might be worth calling around to your older LBSes to see if there's a dusty old thing in back. Don't expect to get anything other than a chromed hi-ten fork. No 531 or Cr-Mo likely.

Just finished going over this burgundy specimen. New grease and chain. It was a deal at $40 and it came with the pedal adapters.

That's pretty nifty! I've never seen that Deore logo in red.

Just "finished" a. 1984-83 Univega Gran Turismo, will post pics when allowed. Kind of a franken bike as I started with a frame and seatpost only. Great riding bike with lots of braze-ons.

nice! Look forward to pictures. I’ve got an ‘84 Specialissima that I’ve been working on and cleaning up and gearing up for some randonneuring this summer. Waiting until it’s set to post a few pictures as well. Love those old Univegas!

Nice. I had a '69 Super Sport that color that I bought new when I was fifteen. Actually got it back a couple years ago, after it had been in a flood and then parked for several years. Doesn't look as nice anymore.

1983 Univega Gran Turismo

Hi posted earlier I had just finished 83 Gran Turismo, here's a pic. Still deciding on brake levers and placement, bars and shift levers Soma 42mm tires barely fit, but boy do I like the ride. I'm afraid I've become a Panracers fanatic.

The 42s are measuring 39mm on cr18s I have a Kasai Dyno hub for the front , might build on a wider rim. Then redo the rear as well

Beautiful! But...

What's the black gak above the bottom of the headset & the crown of the fork?

And riding in Reno on the first clear dry days after last week's 3 days of light snow...it rides nice...might have to procure 100mm nitto technomic...just a bit to much reach on the 125
I'll clean it next winter

With the rest of the bike looking spiffy clean, the dried black doesn’t look like loose headset ooze.

It was not as dry and moldy as it looked , may be from the old brake pads? Had just replaced with the Kool stops. They are adjusted better now, but will check the parts bin to see if I have some cantis with less reach, might set up better with 700c rim difference from the original 27in 630s
