Some interesting observations but I think the original writer is confused about actual cyclists. Not all cyclists are commuters.
I bike 10,000 miles a year and I own two vehicles, have insurance, buy fuel, oil etc. I am a cyclist and do not commute to work.

"Bicycle is the slow death of the planet." Maybe. The automobile is the far faster way to get there. Climate change, paving the earth's surface with asphalt and concrete. Associated pollution affecting trees (the O2 machines) etc. (I won't include what that pollution and car accidents are doing to us because every time the auto takes one of use, it gives the Earth just a tiny bit more breathing room.)

All joking aside, my wife and I had just bought a condo by the harbor , owned two cars, both of us worked full time jobs when we decide to make a life change. It was sometime in the mid seventies. By 1976 we had rented out the condo , put the cars on blocks and locked them in the garage, bought a large enough sailboat to live on , and bought a couple of bikes for transportation. We both kept our jobs but commuted on our bikes . At that time in California , insurance rates were rising rapidly so it made sense to us to just get non operation status on the cars and not drive them. We had been sailing quite a bit and wanted a larger boat so that’s what we did. I think it was at least two years that we just pedaled and sailed when we weren’t working. We stayed on the boat for twelve years or so but eventually got a VW camper van for transportation and weekend getaways when the weather was too bad to sail out to the islands.

I think the person that made the comment was doing it to provoke thought. Not as a statement of fact. If you look at any developing country, the bicycle plays a critical roll in the prosperity of the country. People commute to work on bicycle and spend money earned from the jobs that they have.
