Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Knife content incoming...

I left my old travel knives at mom's because we don't go to races anymore. The gyuto had gotten dull from its factory edge but the only stone I had here was a JKI Gesshin 1k/6k combo that turns out to have "somehow" gotten clogged with stainless crap and is in serious need of a cleaning with a diamond plate. So I ordered a Shapton Pro 1k (thanks Amazon; sometimes the evil empire is handy) and fixed it (and her two good knives I got her too). The Tanaka Ginsanko is... unpleasant on the stones and harder to get a good edge on. I am tempted to improve it but everything is OOS anyway.

The nice side is, AG commented that it was MUCH better than it was. She has gotten spoilt; it was still far sharper than anything she had prior to me.

Gorgeous place to ride, good food and it was cheap when we were there. I We didn’t want to come home. I’ve heard that it isn’t cheap since they joined the EEU.

I still poke around at knives online (forum lurking and IG feed) and get tempted every once in a while, but I haven't felt the need to make any moves lately. A good nakiri would probably be the most likely addition, but I've gotten along well without one up to this point, so *shrug*

Can’t believe the amount of carnage in this Femmes TdF! Seems like the skills may not be quite up to the level of speed and aggressiveness. Great racing, though.

I'm happy with what's at home (the obsession over n+1 got quenched by the heritage gyuto), but I want a good knife here. I just cut a pineapple with this Tanaka and it felt gross when I tried to just push it through. That dman well shouldn't happen. If no one else cares I'll handle it myself.

Of course I may just be mildly annoyed a few weeks over the next year and then hopefully have all the knives here and zero in Texas.

If anyone happens to be thinking, "you know - my palms aren't nearly sweaty enough," I've got a video for you. A climber that I loosely follow on youtube met up with Alex Honnold, of Free Solo fame, for a little climbing session sans ropes -

This screenie of Alex casually filming doesn't give me anxiety at all, nope.

My son climbs, and met Alex at a promotional event. Said the dude is crazy, not in a careless way but in a very calculating way.

Because they don't have any crashing in the men's race?

You're right about the racing, though. The sprint finish yesterday was incredible and the winner today was brilliant.

I used Mrs. rjones28's fancy knife to prepare our dinner tonight (she's recovering from surgery). It's nice and sharp.

I think it’s less for the men per racer km: much larger denominator there. Gravel obviously doesn’t count. Might also be the more selective coverage.

So...I'm walking to work this morning with my road wheels in hand in preparation for tubeless tire installs later today. Some Fred on a bike share bike riding through a crosswalk against traffic says to me "Keep working and you will be able to afford the rest of the bike."

Is she recovering from surgery because you used her knife to fix dinner, or did you use her knife to fix dinner because she had surgery?

Either way, I wish her a speedy recovery.
