I used to go through these double tunnels often. There is rarely any car traffic but one time the fog was so thick I couldn't see the ground or the curbs. We got off and walked. I don't know the rider in the pic.

That's pretty much the same gearing I ran at 30x18. I had sliding dropouts though

I suspect the Chorus setup does not have the same problem. This seems to be a problem with SHIMANO shifters.
I know the pic looks dirty but that's because I included the black plastic extension on the ferule/cap of the housing when I installed the cable, it was all gooey so for the replacement I got rid of that. I don't think it was a big player in the process, however. I am willing to consider other cables but have very low expectations.

We know you're thrifty and all, but use the top end Dura Ace polymer coated cables. That coating does a lot to reduce friction and will have your cables lasting much longer. You could even spray some Teflon dry lube into that end of the cable housing a few times before assembling the shift cable to add a little dry lubrication to the inside of the housing. A wet lube won't function the same and will add drag to your shifting.

I have a couple bolts that are a challenge to remove so I think I need a bolt extractor. These include the bolts to my cleats and the 4mm crankarm fixing bolts.
I don't see that Park Tools makes a bolt extractor. Any suggestions for a budget bolt extractor for bicycle-sized bolts?? Most of the ones on ScamBay seem to be designed for autos and are too big.

I honestly don't recall if that cable is a PTFE coated cable or not, but I have used those fancier cables in the past and I can say for my usage, it does not extend cable life.

or go downtube shifters ... and even better when paired with 7spd or 6spd (double bonus)

Are the crank bolts the Shimano style with 2 pinch bolts? Those are probably hardened bolts. Are they stripped? You might be able to pound a bigger Allen wrench in there, maybe an SAE size.
Cleat screws might need a good soaking with a penetrating oil. Are they Allen head or slotted? An impact driver might help if you can borrow one.
