Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Better yet, don't BUY the chairs in the first place!

Old joke:

A farmer is cutting off the top of the doorway to the barn because his mule kept hitting his ears when he went in and out of the barn.

a neighbor asked why he didn't just dig the dirt out from under the door and the farmer replied that it was the mule's ears that were too long, not his legs!

I know it's a huge change but I had all the parts so all it took was some time. I figured if too much flexion in the knee joint was the problem that's a good way to tell. I'm 6'2" with long legs and proportionally long femurs.

Yesterday things felt pretty good and I rode our local ~18 minute (for me) climb. Knee definitely got aggravated a bit but not nearly as much as with the longer cranks and lower saddle height.

$6500 for a bike that I would use off-road and in any weather? Maybe if I had a good job. I've always thought of off road machines as somewhat expendable, at least they live with the possibility of damage and I neglect them.
That bike is beautiful but if I was going to spend that much it would be for a road bike. Or maybe a car.

I can't believe how sore I am today after the weekend's activities. It hurts to get out of the chair. I need to be ready for 50ish tomorrow but thankfully not a ton of climbing.
Maybe I am too old for this stuff.

Would you feel different if it was a $6500 MTB? Just curious. Brand new, top end machines go for a lot of money these days.

I played golf for a while, many years ago. I couldn't handle the frustrations that go along with the game.

I don't think I would feel differently about it. I have lusted after an Ibis Ripley in the $5k range but it's out of reach right now.

Seriously if I had a decent income, even just what I made while working, I would probably have some new bikes by now. Although I'm a cheap-ass about most things.

I did buy a new motorcycle in 1985. It was a 1984 Yamaha YZ490 and it was on clearance. Out the door with spark arrestor and green sticker for $2250. I had to borrow the money. Last motorcycle I had, sold it in 1992. It stood up pretty well to years of thrashing.

The only time I tried it was when I was still drinking. Perfect sport for an alky.

Drinking while golfing made things worse for me. I was probably expecting far too much from myself. For my mental health, I'm better off not playing the game.

My HT MTB had an original retail price of over $8k (I bought it used for significantly less, but still a fair amount of money). It's a light CF dirt rocket, designed to be ridden hard in rough terrain. Regardless of price tag, not using it for what it was intended would be a shame. Same goes for that Time gravel bike. IMO.

I must be cheap. I quit motocross when the bikes cost more than $2000. That was a LONG time ago. The most expensive bicycle I own cost $2300. I think 105 is out of my range now.

My first time golfing was with my roommate who I was drinking with. He had to twist my arm a bit, but when he threw some cans of beer in his golf bag I was sold

I just picked up a new pair of Adidas golf shoes for $10 the other day, so I guess I should look into golfing again. I wish they'd let you play from a fatbike. I'd just head out with a 3 wood, 7 iron, and a putter lashed to the bike.

Tiagra is the new 105.

Sad, but true.

Early 80s? I had a 1972 Montessa that someone traded to me for some work on his car. Later I bought a used1979 Husqvarna 390 which had been refreshed by Team Husky and donated to Russ Darnell MX school, along with 12 other bikes. Then came a used Maico 490 which lived up to the "Maico Breako" moniker. Finally the YZ.

70's I think. I was friends with the local dealer so I usually got some good prices. My first motocross bike was a Maico 400. Great powerband and handling. But seriously had to almost rebuild it after every race. The kickstarter gear behind the clutch would fail many times. It was a bear to start when it did work. The shop owner ordered the brand new Yamaha YZ 360's when they first came out. They only came in a crate of two, so he sold me one for dealer price, $1600. (the first model without the monoshock). It had SO much power it was almost uncontrollable, and weighed 210 pounds.

So that would mean that 105 is the new Ultegra, which makes Ultegra the new Dura Ace. So, what's Dura Ace now?
