One of the side benefits of running video cameras is that you can go back and review the footage to try and understand what happened. In this case, it was worse than I originally thought!

Law in california is 3 feet, looked like they were under a foot. Did you turn in the plate # to CHP?

they could have waited until they both passed you before passing the truck on the right!

I don’t think the authorities will do anything unless there’s an accident or malice. I thought about reporting it to the DMV, but was told even they wouldn’t do anything.

I hear in London, they would use the video to prosecute. Wouldn’t that be nice!

Just post it onto Youtube. Unblank the licence plate.

I heard of police charging motorists for doing 200 km/hr in Alberta from those same drivers posting of themselves in Facebook.

Cycling Mikey has tons of successful prosecutions from submitting video evidence. In the UK they'll send the registered keeper (owner) a Notice of Intended Prosecution with the offense(s) listed. That person must show up to court and identify who was driving at the time. If they don't show or refuse to name who was behind the wheel, they don't get convicted of the original offense(s), but they do get smacked with Failure to Identify. When I last checked that carried a £660 fine plus court fees (usually upwards of £200).

Love those videos by Cycling Mikey. I'd love for something similar here in the States.

It's like some drivers simply don't comprehend that they are allowed to simply slow down and wait until it's safer to do something.

Near my house we have several intersections with mini roundabouts. I think they're really more about just slowing drivers on the main road. More of a chicane than anything. I once had a car pass me right as I was going around one of these. It of course forces the car to go far right (I'm in the USA) as it effectively just narrows the road, a lot. That was a lesson for me to claim the lane before I get to these things. My way of making it clear to a driver to just stay behind me until we get past this.

My experience is most drivers are actually pretty courteous where I live. But there are the few that I really think see running into something as the better option to just slowing down or stopping.

Do you need to crowd the line there?? NO
Do you have a mirror?? NO, as far as I can see in the shadow.
Are those the "New design, narrow is safer lane" nonsense? Truck isn't comfortable in his own lane, it looks like.
Maybe the lanes were made narrower to make the BL wider.

Basic essential rule of roundabouts: take the lane pretty far in advance of actually entering it.

Cyclist is not crowding the white line, if that is what you mean, he's in an appropriate location.

No way to know if the cyclist is using a mirror. Could be a mirror on bar end left side, we can't see that in the photo.

Yeah, it's like they forget the brake pedal is there.

Not sure what you're smoking, but it's clear in the images that I am right in the center of the bike lane while the car is literally in my lane by about a foot or two.
These lanes are a decent width and this bike lane has been there for as long as I can remember, but yes the truck was either distracted or difficult to control. Reviewing the video, it veered into the right lane twice, but both times with plenty of time for the passing car to ease off and not pass until safe.

Don't think the law protects trucks, but yeah I shudder to think what would have happened if that truck was even a few inches more over.

Well it's because the new LEFTY engineers are all in on narrow lanes to make cars go slower. Clamming berms and speed bumps are being put everywhere.
So now we have to watch the damn curbs instead of down the road for kids. Tire scuffed curbs are the result. Every crossing has to be narrowed for old folks. I guess they don't care about cars being able to open their doors without getting wacked.
NIMBY has gone WILD.

GamblerGORD53 can you please take your off topic rants to P&R? This thread has neither narrowed roads nor car doors getting struck. If you can't see what's clearly in the pics, please refrain from commenting until you can get your eyes examined.

That bike lane is over 5' wide
The motor vehicle lanes are over 14' wide
The speed limit on that street is 45mph and nobody is trying to slow them down
The bike lane ends when there are houses on either side to make room for street parking
Any lane becomes too narrow when a truck is taking up part of it

That quote wasn't me. The quote HTML code got messed up in that post. Seems to be messed up in this one too. Maybe BF is having tech difficulties.

Weird, now more quotes are screwed up than were the last time I checked this thread. Fixed mine.

I would definitely recommend reporting to the local police department, specially given the fact that their job is to uphold the law and in this case, the 3 feet law was definitely broken. This happened with me earlier this year and I shared the video with the local PD. They tracked down the driver and let him know about the incident. Quite possible that you may not get the same response, but it is worth a shot in the hope that it may result in one less driver being careless around cyclists.

It's UBB not html

I just sent an email to the CEO of DHL Canada a series of photos of what one of their drivers did. I sent it to him because I looked all over the DHL site and googled but could not find the appropriate department to send this kind of complaints to. Online complaints are only about delivery of packages so you need a tracking number.
So I asked the CEO to forward the email to the appropriate department just to remind their drivers to check for cyclists in the bike lane before making their turns.

Wonder if other courier practice what UPS does & utilizes left turns (forward & backing up) as much as possible rather than making right turns?
