Di2 charging but shifters aren’t working after shipping

Good afternoon,
Can anyone give me some advice, please.
I’ve shipped my bike abroad and the di2 is charging, but no power going to the shifters. All internal, any ideas on where to look/ what to do? All bike shops closed unfortunately- thanks in advance

Peel back the bar tape and check the connections at the shifters. Best to have the Shimano install tool to snap the connections in place if they came out. A good installer will leave a 180 deg. loop of excess cable at the shifter end. If nobody did this easy to pull out a cable.

rim/disc only matters for 12 speed. So we won’t care about that.

If you hold the left shift lever for 2 seconds, does the light on the junction box flash?
what about the right shifter .

check both buttons on on both left and right shifters.

We are looking to see if both front (FD) and rear (RD) derailleurs are not working.

Please confirm you did look for the charging light on the junction box, and NOT a light on the left and right shifters, because that's a 12 speed only light!

(I have 6870 Di2)
How do you know it's charging? You should see the green light on the charger power block -- this lights up when the charger is connected to the junction box, turns off when it's charged completely.

Did you disconnect the seat tube battery and remove the saddle when you shipped the bike? I spent a very long time troubleshooting before I found that the Di2 cable wasn't connected all the way -- there's a slight click as the wire is inserted, but it needs the second stronger click to actually make the connection.

BE WARNED.... As a new user you must keep your posting to a minimum.

This forum will limit your posts per day until you reach 10 posts.
There is no way around this limit and you will need to wait until tomorrow for more posts.
This is an anti-spam rule and we all went through it.

I mention it because you seem to have an immediate need and waiting a day might be tough.

BTW Welcome to Bike Forums.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the posting Barry. If i hold the green light at the junction box, it shows fully charged. Neither front or rear derauliiers working, and checked battery in seat post etc, all seems fine.
I think (but as you can see no expert) it’s something to do with the shifters.
Huge thanks for all the advice- amazing forum 👌🏼

You likely have three connections to the junction box.
These are easy to see if the box is mounted under the stem.
1. Left shifter
2. Right shifter
3. Battery

If you are able to charge the system, Junction light comes on during charging, then junction light goes out when fully charged. Generally (version R8000 series) the junction to battery connection appears to be good.
Unsure if this is the same in older versions (some have smarts in the battery mount).

Losing both shifter functions is a bit weird.
Example, on my R8000 I can fully unplug the RD and the FD still moves when asked.

Didn't think to ask..... if the bike has the D-Fly bluetooth add-on, You could try connecting to the App and see what Di2 components show up.

If the bars were removed for shipping, I'd be checking the Di2 cables connecting the shifters to the junction box, starting with the junction end, because it's easier to see.

Please do report back on the final solution.

All the best

Barry

Component failure is very rare IMO. It is very likely just a bad connection somewhere.

The wires have a double bump that you should feel when you push them onto the individual components. The Shimano tool helps greatly. There are two different tools depending on whether you have the old or newer Di2 wires.

Check this site out for some pointers and also for links to the Di2 manuals at Shimano that might help you.

www.bettershifting.com

Checking the connections at the shifters underneath the hoods and then following the wire back to their other point of connection and checking that too would be the first places I'd check, but won't necessarily be the culprit depending on what may or may not be being seen if you use eTube to show you what it sees.

I have had problems alluded to by Irideo01, when the cable end is inserted into the socket there is frequently a palpable
'double bump' that is not always felt IME but when it is unless that second clik is felt the connection will not be made.
A bike shipped, especially with bars turned at an extreme angle, is at risk for disconnex at the brifters especially but
possibly at the junction box as well. The cable connex are by far the most likely explanation for your problem.

Since the battery charger shows a charging LED, that means that the connection between the junction box and the battery is OK.

I'd look for a problem between the junction box and the shifters. Since none of the shifters are working... is there a Y-splitter installed on this bike? Does it have the bar-end junction box?
Since it's a 6870 bike, it probably has the below-the-stem SM-EW90 Junction box, and no Y-splitter... so I'd double check the connections at the Junction and the shift levers. Pull back the hoods like the others have said, and inspect the connectors. Note that the bottom ports are for sure with the SW-R610 satellite shifter only (assuming these are the 6870 shifters).

Since you have the charger with you - do you also have a windows computer/laptop? If so, connect the charger to the bike and download/install and run E-Tube Project 3.4.5 or 4.0.4 (https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/e-tub...t/archive.html).
If ETP 4.0.4 complains that your charger needs to be updated, run 3.4.5 instead. Doing so will automatically update the charger.

If you're running ETP 4.0.4, open the 'update' tab after connecting to the bike. That shows all connected components and this should tell you where the problem is.
If ETP 3.4.5, then run the 'connection check' and it'll show you a list of components right after connecting.

Don't know how to interpret the things you see? Post a screenshot
