i just got back to the states form many depoyments in the USArmy...and to my shock a simple water bottle has gone up 100% from when i last bought one here.. in europe, they cost about $5/6 american

Sorry to continue the thread, but:

For the last 20 years or so I've bought 24-oz bottles of Gatorade to use on the bike. Clear, with a twist-open nozzle, fits snugly in a bottle cage. Cost is about $2.50, but you get free Gatorade, or a free bottle, depending on how you look at it.

Earlier versions used plastic that eventually became brittle and cracked, but the current bottles are far more durable. The ones I'm using now have already lasted a few years, with no sign that they'll deteriorate any time soon.

The only problem is that very few convenience stores carry the 24-oz sport bottles these days for some mysterious reason.

I use stainless steel bottles with screw on lids they cost me $ 20 - $ 30 .

If you want a simple water bottle that holds water, but doesn't have bike-specific logos or a special valve on top try looking in department stores that sell bikes (Target and Walmart) or generic sporting goods stores (Big-5, Dicks). They all sell them, usually having something comfortably under $10. REI has 22oz bottles with their 'Co-op' logo on them starting at around $7.

You missed the water bottle thread of last year. Like I have said for 10 years now I will happily buy my Camelbak Podium Ice or Chill bottles.whenever needed. Luckily mine have lasted for years, I unfortunately lost my first one after many years and the real loss was the old school mudguard on the cap but ah well things happen. I still got 8 years from it or so not a bad deal. You can find cheap water bottles heck you can get real cheap ones that even come with water in them or other beverages.

However I am all in on good quality bottles that last a long time and allow water to taste like water.

younger son recently home for holidays, says he needs a new water bottle - going to the Garneau outlet to get one,
i says, lets check in the basement, might be able to find an unused one. Just about every time i've done some sort of organized or charity ride seems like another water bottle follows me home, Sure enough, there were 51 in the bag - he found one he liked. Lots of simple plastic bottles often with a spout that can be purposed as a water bottle.

Dick's Sporting goods had the small Camelbak Chill bottles on sale for $7 a few months ago. Wish I'd bought a couple more at that time. I swear I've seen some "regular" water bottles for $10 or more in bike shops for the last 20 years or so

If you wanted to give a simple answer, you could have said inflation. Or some other economic theory.

In 42 years of cycling, I have never ever purchased a bicycle water/fluid bottle. And I have several extras. Most were obtained as SWAG at supported rides, runs, triathlons, etc. A few picked up laying along the course after the event, taken home, washed and put to use.

The last water bottle I bought cost $20 plus $7.00 shipping. But it was a Cinelli. Vintage Shimano ones are a little cheaper.

Well, a quick search suggests that $10 is a common price for bottles, and one that someone who doesn't have time to wait for shipping is likely to have to pay. If a Performance Bike bottle costs $10, that price is clearly representative.
