Vintage parts TA crank / dura ace RD7100 / several frames

Hi,

i hope this is the right forum here, but it's not necessarily about a single frameset but more about a collection of parts someone dug out from, what i presume was an inheritance.
It's on our local "craigslist" equivalent and it has a bunch of neat parts such as a TA specialities Crankset triple, a Dura Ace RD 7100 and some campagnolo FD. Additonally there are like 4 frames, a bunch of forks, and loads of other stuff. (DT shifters, handlebars, fenders, racks.. you name it).
He wants like 100 quid for all of it. I feel this is a fair price for the crankset and the dura ace rd alone.
What do you lot think? Immediate buy? Seems like a very tempting offer to me.

As always, without photos it is almost impossible to say with any degree of accuracy, especially with such a vague inventory. 100 quid indicates you are likely in the UK -- so a bit less than $125 USD. Even so, assuming it's not all complete knackered it is hard to imagine that it is not worth at least that ... Certainly worth an immediate looksee with cash in hand if it is not too far away...

Had to translate quid to dollars ($123), so I would say the crank, DA RD and Campy FD basically make the rest free at that price.

If any of the frames turn out to be decent or the other stuff is pretty decent you’d do well.

Aren't TA cranks thought after? New ones w/o chainrings are like 210 USD afaik. I defo wanted to own a set

For roughly $123 (100Ł‎), I would jump on the lot of parts pretty quickly if it were in my area. Just roughly skipping through the photos, you might have enough to put another one of the frames back together to complete a bike if you can find the matching fork and spend $20 or so on cabling and tape and then maybe throw on some spare wheels laying around. The rest of it, give it a quick degrease and clean-up and you'd make your money back and some for to fund the next project

yea.. clearly someone else had the same idea and jumped on the offer before i had a chance. I am just haggling for the crankset now and keep my fingers crossed i can actually get it. Would be a nice fit/alternative crankset for my randonneur. (GrandCru on it atm)

Be sure to inspect carefully, particularly the tapers. Its not unusual to find worn out tapers on cranksets in that condition.

The components appear to make the lot worth the price.

In the United States the frames would be difficult to sell.

I recall seeing somewhere that the Sears Free Spirits were built with Reynolds 531; is that true or an urban legend?

yea, i didnt make it in time and the stuff got bought by someone else. Low and behold, the TA crank resurfaced for 80 €

Too bad the dark burgundy Puch got away - looks like 531 tubing sticker, which would indicate built in Graz using silver-brazing. For that matter, the Sears/Puch built with 531 has a weird cult following, and I always keep my eyes peeled for one cheap ...

The darker Puch looks 80s, as the mid-70s Puchs (and Austro-Daimlers) used all clamp-on fittings including rear brake cable clamps and a clamp-on rear derailleur stop. I think I see a Reynolds decal on the seat tube. Puchs and Austro-Daimlers built with 531 were constructed in Graz, and the mid-late '70s literature stated they were carefully mitered and hand silver-brazed. I have my old 1976 Puch Royal X, which was the same frame as the top of the line Royal Force - both of which were considered also-rans, as the Austro-Daimler marque was the prestige range. Mine has a wonderful ride quality to it, and I am ever so happy to have found it and bought it back after 32 years of it being gone. The better Puchs are undervalued, while the A-D Vent Noir, Ultima, etc. are sought-after.

The Sears Ted Williams bikes built with 531 and Shimano forged ends are a cult thing - I mean, it's a Sears bike built with 531! They're a fun basis for a stealth town bike and some folks make fixed-gear conversions out of them. They're not the greatest handling bikes, and their finish work is sloppier than a Friday afternoon '71 Gitane, but they have a certain coolness.
