Beautiful ST-600!

1985 Cannondale ST 400; very comfy long distance machine with 700 x 32 tires. Plus a 1997 Cannondale H500 that I'm fixing up for a friend. The v design for the 16 inch frame is a really smart design on a small frame as it gives better clearance.

This is the bike to rule them all if you could only have one -- horrors! heaven forfend! -- and in any case a really nice ride in the vineyards above the Rhine river near my home town. It's a '95 T400, s my zero bike™ I keep at my parents' house -- I have some Cannondales at home, too.

My 1985 Cannondale SM600 with 24"/26" wheels. I built this in 1985 when I worked in a bike shop. I made a few changes to components.

This ST1000 frame has been in my storage unit for a few months. I've been hesitant to build it up because the previous owner must have used too short of a bb axle at one point, which made a groove in the drive-side chainstay. I smoothed/filed it down, but I'm not sure if the area is compromised. I couldn't find any cracks or signs of fatigue. Thoughts? (As a bonus though, I discovered the XC Comp crankarms — from my other ST1000 — are actually rebadged XC Pros)

Picked up a 2007 R800 in perfect condition....put new tires, brake pads and bar tape. Paid the person $120 for this ....it weighs 16 lbs and is super smooth with the 105 and Ultegra equipment.


Perfect condition ....not a scratch on it.

Here's another old Cannondale -- it's the twin to the one from post #1328. This one is also a T400, special-ordered in early 1995, but I think it's officially a 96 model. Great bike. This is a few years after I rebuilt it for the first time; that's when I upgraded to 8speed and bar-end shifters. Apologies for the wrong-side picture; I was young then. Well, young-er, anyway.

The picture was taken after a 120 mile overnighter, with some backcountry gravel roads. We didn't know we were trendsetters in 2010!

The front panniers are first-generation Ortliebs I bought in 1986. I still have one of them.
What I don't use anymore is that bar setup -- swapped the whole thing out for a Nitto Dirtdrop and a 46 cm Nitto Noodle. Far superior for old people.

I might as well add this one also -- this is the ST600 that was given to me by @Mad Honk, in its final iteration for 2022. Starting with a frame gives a lot of freedom, and while I mostly took parts I had on hand, the 44 cm Noodle and Technomic stem were a choice, and I bought them new. The brake levers are Triomphe and work beautifully, plus they're mirrycle compatible. Love this bike. The seat posts on these bikes tell a story -- Cannondale should have made a 24" frame, just for me. The other two are 23 and 25, and while they work, they're both near the edge.

The picture was taken on the day we reached the Lake Michigan shore on last year's DALMAC. If you ever have the chance -- that's a fantastic ride, always on Labor Day weekend, highly recommended.

In the background is a bonus 1993 T700 that belongs to an old friend of mine -- and started me down the Cannondale rabbit hole. It looks like it's three years old, rather than thirty.

Here is my 1988 complete original as found ,true barn find, Original tires and 105 pedals. It was so dirty you could not read Cannondale on frame. I had to cut off tires as they had bonded to the rims. Cleaned up like new and now I ride it all the time. Ther is a picture in the 65+ as it is now

I was just kidding about buying it (though I would). That is an excellent find and I agree with you about keeping it as a rider. Just a real nice find. Enjoy it. That will be a solid, stiff hill climber.

My Zero Bike found near my brother’s place and kept in his garage. 1992 3.0 SR600. Paint is in great shape. New tires, tubes, cables housing, bar tape and hoods. Everything else but the Turbo is original. When I get home, I plan to trade one or more of my steel bikes for one of these very fun Cannondales to keep in my garage.

My bike is a 1994 R500, a beautiful solid cobalt blue (no fade), triple chainring. I bought it because the top tube is short enough for me (5'5" F) and the triple was appealing.

Though everything else is Shimano RX100, the front derailleur is a Suntour that specifies "max 48T" --- you can see it in pictures of some of these bikes, which have 52T large chainrings. And sure enough, in the highest gears, there's a lot of derailleur noise and even failure to engage. Everything else mechanically has been a dream rolling.

I'm wondering if anybody has some intel about the Shimano RX100-AFD553. Turns out there are variations GS and ST, maybe others, of this derailleur. I'd like to get one that's sure to work.

And why was that small-capacity Suntour derailleur ever used?

Thanks! Yeah the clean ones don’t last long. This one had been a garage hanger since their kid got his drivers license.

Converting the 1 1/4” stem to threadless was the only thing that was a bit of a task. I ended up using a Nitto adapter. It’s pretty dang nice!

I might have found an opportunity to trade for this 2.8 but I’m afraid it is a 56 whiz is too small. A 58 is borderline. What do you think? The Catalogs suggest that it is a 95 and serial numbers won’t help me. I can’t see a pump peg which my Texas bike has in size 58 but it’s a 3.0 so….

Looks a touch small for a 58cm, even with the big Cannondale tubing. But that's my best guess having owned a few of these.

My money is on 58. I wouldn't buy it based on that but I'd drive a bit and take a tape measure. The fat tubes make the head tube look short. By the time you can get a fist around the head tube without touching the top or down tubes, you're in 25" territory -- and 23", which my 95 tourer is, is 58.4 cm.

60, 58, 56 (official) I've found that Cannondales fit and ride 1 or 2 cm smaller.
I have read that Cannondale measured their official size from the top of the BB to the top of the seat tube, and it seems to work.





2.8's ride good with the carbon or steel forks, but maybe not so much with aluminum.
The frames are a joy to look at with all the manipulated tubing, pretty special back then.
