Finished the "Miles for Matt" century, rolling past 100 miles in 6:35. Tons of roadies beat me, but, for me, a great time.

Tour de Cure in Reston, VA and points west and north on Sunday. 100.5 miles. Just about ideal weather conditions, compared to last year which was 100+ degrees and humid.

A little late into the game, but I got my first century in at 116.33 miles.
I like the idea of doing a century every month for the rest of the year.

Rats! Mine was only 116.27 miles today
First one in a couple of decades. While I have been riding a lot and racing a bit I haven't gone more than about 70 miles since forever. I did it self supported, almost non-stop and probably all wrong:
- left at 6:30 after a bowl of granola, a banana and about a quart of water and caffeine (yeah, I know, but I'm addicted)
- wore a set of brand new (never worn) Sugoi RS bibs ...which worked out great until nature called a stop for "number two" Getting completely nekked in a construction site Portapotty wasn't that entertaining. This was the only time I stopped.
- brought 3 bottles, two with water and one diluted Gatorade.
- started eating and drinking at about mile 25, but in small denominations.
- had one energy bar, one gel and some sort of gummy energy Ju-jubes
- I had about two ounces of fluids left when I got back (it was quite hot for most of the ride)
- I was able to maintain a 20 mph average, including the bib-wrestling pit stop. Considering the rolling hills (2350 ft total) and headwind off the lake at the end, I'm quite happy with that.
- Tomorrow evening's 50 mile group hammer fest may be more painful than usual (if I decide to show up)
I feel quite good after the fact. Doing this or a similar loop once a month till cross-country ski season starts doesn't sound all that ridiculous.

On Bike Virginia this week, "Century Day" was on Monday. The ride was a loop in the Culpepeper area. I missed a turn on one of the optional long routes and ended up riding 110.3 miles.

I got a late start riding this year. I did not get out in earnest until the week of May 11th. My first century of the year was June 7th:
June 7th ---King’s Tour of the Quabbin: 100.7 miles ~7,000 ft of climbing 6hrs 3 min @ 16.6 mph. No drafting
June 14th ---132 miles solo. All aerobic 8:04 @ 16.4 mph
June 20th ---Harpoon B2B: 146 miles (about 100 solo) ~7,000 ft climbing 7:55 @ 18.65 mh.
June 28th ---108 miles solo up into NH. 6:17 @ 17.4 mph.
This year, I am making a point of stopping only every 50 miles to refill my bottles. Also, this year, I am riding only using gels and sports drink (~250 cals/hr)
I plan on continuing a century-a-week schedule more-or-less ‘till it gets too cold. (November?). Then I don’t know what I’ll do. Maybe I’ll switch to a century a month.

June done on June 30th.
I was surprised when I had to wear arm and leg warmers for my entire May century. I was flabbergasted when I had to do the same thing on June 30th!!
It was a great ride. Out 45 miles, breakfast, and then back. I actually rode 104 miles. Wind was consistent from the NW. I was a little sore and stiff from riding 450 km of the 600 km brevet on the 27th and 28th with the Great Lakes Randonneurs. The swamp that was my crotch just could not take the final 90 miles...plus I was tired
I started at 5:00 am and finished before Noon. Riding time was 5:50. A mechanical slowed me down, and the wind was pretty stiff on the way out. Here's to getting more miles in July

Beautiful 100.3 mile ride starting in Columbia Furnace, VA into WV and back. Some of the nicest roads and scenery I've ever done in this area, and that's saying something. The only rough section was a teeny, tiny, rough road going up over a pass in WV that had just been chip-sealed, but they hadn't removed the rock chips yet. I had trouble keeping traction at some points on that stuff. Otherwise, it couldn't have been a better day!
So July is off to a good start it seems.

July is done. 110 miles and no arm warmers or leg warmers!! I needed those in May and June!! June 30th even! Today was warm with big cumulus clouds! I started off with three other riders and split off after 40 miles. I met my family at a restaurant because I had a coupon for a free burger! Those of you that have read my other posts may know that I don't map out my rides. I get on and go. Today I hit my target (the restaurant) but I ended up with a few bonus miles. I like to make my centuries 100 miles, but today I will settle for 110 miles in 6 hours 10 minutes. The burger was delicious! Keep those centuries going people! Good luck to everyone.

Did another Century on Friday - 100.4 miles. It ended up being an out-and-back, weather was too hot/humid to go where I had planned. I still had lots of fun. It won't be my last this month, with August having two (both on my upcoming US 99 - Washington tour).

Saturday and Sunday I did a ride I did for the first time last year. On Saturday I rode Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP in Virginia, from Big Meadows (about the middle of the 105-mile road) to Front Royal at the northern end, and back, for 104 miles. I stayed overnight at the lodge, and then on Sunday I did the southern half, from Big Meadows to Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro, and back, for 111 miles. I got a bit rained-on both days, but for the most part the weather was fantastic. Not too hot, and not too humid.
Saw a fair amount of miscellaneous wildlife, including 5 bears which is the most I've ever seen in the park.

July 11
101.1 miles
18.0 mph average speed
5:37:20 moving time
6:26:21 total time
This was my first century in the summertime heat. (June's century was before it really got hot.) Temps for the July century started around 80 degrees at 5:30 a.m, probably in the upper 90's by ride end. The humidity makes the heat index well above 100 degrees with the weather service issuing a heat advisory.
This should be my last century on my '03 Bianchi Vigorelli. I purchased an '08 Cannondale Touring 2 bike which is about 6-7 pounds heavier with wider tires, so I'll be curious to see how riding time is affected on the new, heavier bike.
