General rule is to hold it.
On something like a double century, that is kind of hard. I will try and wait until a rest stop, or fast downhill (wind), whichever comes up first.

Yes, like many other tandem maneuvers, this is one that will eventually become intuitive to your team but needs to be called out and communicated when you're still new to tandems.
After a few months and miles of practice, your Stoker will learn to recognize the signs of the Captain's raising off the saddle, followed by a pause in cadence. That's her signal to get out of the drops and get her face into the fresh air as soon as possible.
Expect to be admonished by the Stoker anytime you do this on a group ride. You can alternate excuses of "it just snuck out while I was taking a butt break" or you can blame it on the dog, even if he's nowhere in sight, just like you do at home.

Resist the urge unless you have a tailwind that's faster than your speed.
Tailwind? Wind from behind? Breeze from the rear?
Never mind.

I simply state.. I am proud to claim that one! Then wait for the fun to begin, my wife is very creative with the pokes and smacks and little annoyances for the next few miles.
Just try not to make a habit of it!

It's all the stoker's fault!
She should not fix gaseous meals (beans/chili again?) the night before a ride!!!
Hate to sound like a commercial, but here's always BEAN-O; take BEAN-O now, so there'll 'be no' gas later. . .
Pedal on TWOgether!

Reg...good one
For us, being an aviation type household, I write it off as thrust helping to increase forward velocity.
