Specialty Water brings to mind the power of Placebo and the effectiveness of Marketing.

I have had alkaline enriched water before. Down in the S.E. corner of Oregon at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge (long before Ammon Bundy was born). The pH was about 8.5. Tasted like <expletive>. Really nasty, but that's what came out of the well. Might have been OK if I had mixed in a wee drop of Talisker, or it might have ruined the flavor of the Talisker.

Alkaline water does have a plausible mechanism of action: buffering blood pH, and, as we have discussed here, bicarb has been shown to enhance performance over short, high intensity intervals. It’s just a big osmotic and sodium load and hard on the tummy. That said, it’s not clear to me that slightly alkaline water from the supermarket can do that.

The water thing just seems silly, but the bicarb gel apparently works at the margin. I don't know if it acts by just neutralizing/alkalinizing the gut and pulling H+ out of the blood that way or whether it's absorbed and acts as a buffer. There are even some data for topical HCO3 painted on the skin, but I don't know how reliable.

Reminds me of the little mini oxygen blaster they are selling at Lowes for performance Carpenters.

This indie reviewer appeared to find some benefit, but well below the advertised claims. I’ve been tempted to try it out just for the hell of it, but never got round to ordering a bottle and it is pretty expensive (even with the 25% GTCC discount).

Ah, talking of bicarb, I’ve often wondered (well maybe not often) about PR lotion. Geraint Thomas plugs it on his GTCC podcast and I have no doubt that he uses it, but they are a sponsor. They make some big claims, which seem highly ambitious. This is the stuff I’m talking about:-

Well in your study, they say the extra hydrogen is added as a hydroxyl. Carbohydrates have lots of hydroxyl groups. So between the group given water with no other added hydroxyls and the group that had hydroxyls added... which might be in the form of carbohydrates, then that might explain the difference

I've been using slightly acidic water infused with essential humulus lupulus oils and fortified with concentrated natural juice from germinated grains.
Results have been terrible.

Reading all this at my local oxygen bar while drinking oxygenated water because I’m in recovery (mode). Junk science to follow.

I'd like to know what professional racers drink. Anyone know?

Chris Horner says that he always enjoyed being given cans of Coke during races. He mentioned in one video that he always tried to made sure he had some solid food in his stomach before drinking the Coke, though. Drinking Coke without taking in food first during a hard race sometimes upset his stomach, he said.
Otherwise, he says he still carries water in one bottle and an electrolyte mix in the other when he does his rides.

I'm partial to Helium water myself. In addition to eliminating the explosive fart risk, it has a pleasant effect on my voice when I scream "car back" randomly on group rides.

Would filling my tires with hydrogen gas make me a faster rider?
