While I agree 100% with everything else you wrote, this is a bad assumption. I deal with non-conformance (NC) on parts/finished goods all of the time. They most definitely occur most frequently with first lot to stock (FLTS). Considering the low volume of this bike, I think it is safe to assume the entire batch was FLST.
I'm right behind you as this being a rushed and barely thought out last-minute mess. Probably explains why they capped the production low too - minimize losses, maximize press coverage, hell with the rest.

Blobs of weld have historical merit. My 73 Gran Sport is a tribute to the 70's bike boom apprentice brazier at the Carlton factory.

"I’ll admit I was expecting the TI-Raleigh to be mostly mouth and not all that much flared trousers, especially with its weight of 9.8kg, but I was completely wrong. It was lively, responsive and exciting yet smooth. When I mentioned this to a framebuilder friend of mine, he said: “Of course. It’s 753.”"
So... 'mouth' is bad and 'flared trousers' is good??

Seems a bit ambiguous/nonsensical to me.

I read it as 'talk the talk, walk the walk'.

Did Raleigh screw up their 40th Anniversary Replica??
Sure they definitely did,.......... otherwise we would not be going through all the palaver in this long thread, and everybody would have been swooning over the bike and the framesets would have been sold out, way before they were even officially issued.

This is quite an old thread now but I just bought one of these on cycle to work and I think it's going to cost me me less that £750 after tax ... Evans had a bit of a deal on this bike at half price, Couldn't resist it (yes I am going to ride it when I go to the office!) there is lots of chat on the thread and how it looks and this and that, but the people that are actually riding these seem to love them so thought I'd pull the trigger at what seems like a good price for me at least. It arrives next week
(this is my first post on this forum, please be kind, but I think I need to list my current collection)

the rear dropouts are normally brazed on a 753 frame not tig welded like on this one. The finishing isn't on a par of what a true 753 Raleigh frame should be.

Has your TI arrived yet? This was a very good price.

An honest comparison of old against new (frame/fork only):

[QUOTE=Whitesands1;23357151]Yes, I quite like it. I've got a slightly shorter stem to fit - same Cinelli 1A off amazon for £30 according to my last bike fit I need to reduce the reach to the bars by an inch (wouldn't have done that in the 80s!). I've been sick so have not been able to ride it in anger yet. Two issues so far are one of the tyre-walls is deformed, looks like it's been leaned against a radiator in Nottingham, so I'll call Raleigh about that rather than trying Evan's customer (non-existent) support. Also the gears jump under load, I'm hoping that disappears when I change the chain to something I can use a split link with as I'm a big fan of wax(also non 1980s activity, I guess I could use the 1960s 1in3 oil I inherited from my dad like my first racing bike to be more authentic), after that I just need to fit some tubeless tires and throw it on my wahoo kickr for the winter training :-) but your right it worked out quite well financially, which is good because I think I would have been scared to ride it at the full R.R.P.

Can you post some pics of 1-2, maybe 3 degree frames plz?
What degree do you think this Raleigh is?

5mm to 10mm upslope displacements were just a thing.
i attributed it to Falerio and possibly even an error. The late Specials and GC jig frames were such, even cheating the front brake mount up against the crown race to the extent the saddle washer had to be filed back to clear the headset. My reasonably early GC from 1970 has a piccolo reach caliper now fitted so that the brake pads will match the rim.
there might be other reasons behind this, Masi introduced the fork curve after all brazing.
a misjudgment of the length required?
It was stated that Mario did not use the Italian jig frames, which I concur as when I saw them they were up high and gathering dust.
I do own a 1975 Carlsbad bike, long after Mario was at the helm and it has a 5mm rise to the top tube also. It is what it is.
for note, that bike was made before the employment of investment cast lugs.
So it goes.

Yes, I quite like it.
Brilliant. Mine arrived yesterday, direct from Raleigh. I think Evans have sold a handful, despite the bike taking a beating on the internet, that's got to be good value for money.
Very well put together, very carefully packaged. I didn't get the "anniversary" box but the bike itself in beautiful order. (I'm new to the Forum so can't post photos).
It's a Sunday best bike for me for very occasional use. I need to lose a bit of weight over the winter so look forward to the first dry spring day. I'm very happy, but don't have the technical appreciation or demands of a bike, but I have to say I think Raleigh did a great job, certainly from my point of view.
