Hamstring tendon reattachment

I had a freak fall while walking, of all things, two weeks ago and am going in for reattachment Friday. Doc says my hamstring should be as good as new. We shall see. Any experiences?

Hamstring tendon reattachment

I posted this in ills and pills and got no responses so I am reposting in the general group in the hope that someone can share their experience. Thanks, David

I've had lots of chronic hamstring tendinopathy, but no tears, AFAIK. I'm guessing you're in for a bunch of PT rehab - eccentric strengthening and the like.

Good luck and give us your progress reports.

Thanks for the great advice. Will do. I still remember rehabbing a partial tear on my throwing arm rotator cuff six years ago. No surgery necessary but my PT was a real taskmaster. Now that shoulder is more flexible than the other!

Surgery went fine yesterday (friday). Lots of pain and crutches for at least two weeks. PT starts on Monday. More updates to come. Will see when they let me back on the F12. It may be a recumbent stationary for me for a while and we'll see when they even allow that!

Hopefully you are in the younger range of 50+. A friend in his mid 70s had tendon repair surgery. After the second surgery failed, they explained that tendons change as we age and the chances of success at his age were never that great. They didn't bother to tell him that before they cut the first time. He had to give up cycling.

Good advice. I am a very active 66 year old who has taken good care of myself. My surgeon did tell my wife in post op consultation that the tendon did show some signs of age but that did not concern him.

Given my background in sports I have a high tolerance for pain but the tear ranked right up there as worst ever pain.

Had my first PT appointment today and things were progressing well until the PT asked "Do you clip into your pedals?" Yes I do, I answered with trepidation. She then said that clipping will probably have to wait 6 months due to the torque involved in unclipping. AARGH ...

Writing with an update. I saw the surgeon for my twelve week post-op check in. He told me the hamstring had fully reattached and the residual numbness and sit bone pain would go away with time as I rebuilt the strength in my hamstring and glute and nerves regenerated. I am back on my Kickr with the F8 and will get the F12 on the road in a few weeks. Rebuilding muscle strength will take some time. For example, I use to be able to do 3 sets of 15 leg presses at 340lbs. Now I am at 160! Bottom line prognosis is full recovery of strength over the next three months.
