1984 Raleigh Super Course for $40?
Hey y'all, I'm looking at getting into road cycling, and I found something I'm considering. It's a 84' Raleigh Super Course, and the seller wants $40 for it. For sure needs tubes, tyres, bar tape. Will probably need a few odds and ends. Cant post pics since I'm new, but it seems to be in okay condition aside from the aforementioned things. Thoughts?

Vintage Racing Bicycles: 1984 Raleigh Super Course - Racing USA
Yes, it's worth $40, especially if it still has the Golden Arrow / 105 group.

Yeah, it's just like that one, but the one i'm looking at is a bit worse for wear. Do you feel like I should lowball the seller since he's had the bike up for sale for several months?

Thank you for posting those! I'm still going through the "you have to post 10 images before you link things to posts"

I agree with @bargainguy.
Your bike is probably worth at least $100 to $200 even in the current condition. Perhaps even more.
But, it is a "Project Bike", and could be a money pit, but you could end up with a really nice bike. From your photos, the paint and decals look reasonably good which is a good start.
I can't tell, but it may well use glue-on sewup/tubular tires. Many were replaced over the years, but there is a resurgence in popularity, especially in classic/vintage groups. But, not as popular for commuters.
Your bike is fairly small. Perhaps around 52cm.
How tall are you? Some people like smaller frames, but it won't fit if you're over 6'.

I'm pretty sure I'm around 5'11" or 6', so it'll be a stretch. I'm gonna buy it tomorrow most likely. I'll be constantly sending pictures of it once I get the perms to!

It should be a fun project bike, and good practice for things like lubing and adjusting bearings and cones and etc.
However, in my opinion, the bike is too small for you.
If you do choose to ride it, pay attention to things like "Minimum Insertion Points" on the stem and seatpost.
A wide variety of lengths of stems and posts are now available.

It's waaaaay too small for you. I'm 5'8" and ride road bikes at least 4-6cm taller than this bike. That bike is appropriate for someone about 5'4".

Too small, but you could fix and flip it and help to pay for a bike that fits you. If tubular tires, then check back with us on how to proceed. For the next bike, look more at 57 or 58 cm frames.
Also "I'm pretty sure I'm around 5'11" or 6'." is a strange thing to say. You don't know how tall you are?

The reason why I said "I'm pretty sure I'm around 5'11 or 6'" is because I get different measurements when I measure myself vs whenever someone measures me.

She doesn’t look like much right now but that is a nice bike and I think it will clean up really well. It looks like it’s been stored dry so hopefully the chrome is in good shape. That’s what you look for in these mid-80s Raleigh USA bikes. Also looks to have the original Araya semi-aero rims. I bet the whole thing cleans up great with new treads, tape, hoods, pads, cables and chain. I’d say worth up to $125 as it sits and closer to $300 all fixed up.
Don’t over spend on fixing it up because you’ll be selling it. Much too small for anyone over 5’9”

I would jump on it just for the wheels if they were in good shape. It looks like a 49cm (19") frame. It's not a low-end department store bike, so it was probably bought for an adult. The size would probably have meant the original owner was a woman. The market by me is pretty dead. Last year was insane, but very little is showing up locally, and then it just sits there forever. Offer $30, since it needs alot (most do). Probably get it for $35. If the components are in good shape you can use them on a larger frame ... 23" or 25". Don't forget top tube length. It's also important for a good fit. Proper sizing matters for comfort when buying bikes and shoes.
