The long downhill on my 9/5 ride cooked the front brakes on my Sutra, and riding in the rain all day generally made the drivetrain less than good. I'll have to give it a tuneup so it doesn't ride like a dumptruck.

As I was riding the MUP near the river tonight it looked like there was a rock on the path but as I rode by I thought it moved. So I circled back and sure enough it was a baby snapping turtle. It was walking away from the river and towards a parking lot, so I scooped it up and brought it down to the river. On my way back that way I found another. Pretty sure they just hatched.

Almost witnessed a horrendous collision. I was coming up behind a woman and her little boy. Kid was maybe 2 or 3 years old. I slowed way down, and also yielded to an oncoming cyclist. He gave me a wave in thanks, but at that instant the kid dashed across the pavement and right into the path of the oncoming bike. The guy had barely enough time to swerve onto the shoulder and just missed the kid. The other bike was probably going a little too fast, but luckily it worked out OK. Hopefully the kid's Mom will also pay a bit more attention, I think if you are going to walk with a little kid on a darkening path that is shared with bikes you need to be more mindful. I don't think this was a situation where the cyclists were at fault.

Coyote on the path tonight, first one I've seen in months. This guy just trotted ahead of me, I had to yell at it to make it get out of the way.

I need to think about some winter tires. Not snow, just cold and wet with maybe some icy patches. I don't usually ride if it is colder than 25F. Right now I have Bontrager R1 Hard Case Lite on my Trek (700x32), but I'm thinking of switching to Continental Grand Prix 4 Seasons. I do wish they had reflective sidewalls, as my bike has no reflectors on the spokes. But they look like they are suited for winter roads, and they get great reviews.

Anybody use these?

Enjoying the end of a rest day at Bald Eagle State Park near Howard, PA, after a night of heavy rain. Including my grocery run I logged 61.9 yesterday.

271 miles in the book so far. Somewhere around 50 tomorrow. Not exactly sure because I tinkered with the route to avoid a dangerous road.

Going to be a cool night tonight. Good tent weather.

Had the bike tuned up a couple days back, but also hurt my back, so I just did a short loop around the 'hood. I will try to get some better miles tomorrow.
