Those are indeed from Palo Alto Bicycles -- here's a screenshot of part of page 14 from their 1979-80 catalog. No photo, but it is listed. The person you spoke to on the phone was likely not born when that tire was made, and at best is ahistorical.

Bet that tire was made by Vittoria. Bought a bunch from Pal Alto Bikes late '70s as training tires. Labels changed but that ribbed tread was common. Never knew how much I took that tread for granted until it disappeared from the market. Fell beck in love when Vittoria brought it back with their Corsa G+ tires. (IMHO, the best tread for climbing out of cracks and back onto the pavement after riding off, either by accident or to dodge passing cars.)
Photo brings back memories. Just for fun, could you measure the width inflated? My memory says between 21 and 23mm but in those days we never measured. (Calipers were a lot less common and the cat liked to run off with the metrics.)

Yowzah, 9 and 15 quid in 1979 dollars for a single tire? Makes a $30 Pasela seem like a downright bargain today. Good reminder; I reckon most of us spent a considerably higher percentage of our income on any given bike-related purchase BITD.

Nah, most of them these days will say, "When I was in college in Boston" (or occasionally "in Cambridge) and expect you to either know what that means or ask them if they went to Harvard so that they can say yes. Speaking as someone who did a postdoc at a private institute associated with their medical school.

I am 95% vegan, specifically low oil vegan (avocados are verboten, that is part of the 5% ), so just proved the stereotype
fell into this year, and it as resulted in bringing my blood sugar down dramatically and good weight loss

Them old cotton tubulars are some good eatin'. Better than anything from Morningstar Farms. Fry 'em up in some peanut oil and enjoy!
