My very first road bike was a Raleigh Record. It was red and black.
That would have been about 1975 and it was all my parents could afford, I think it was $75 brand new.
Must have weighed at least 25 lbs.
It started my road bike journey and I had some great times on that bike.
It was eventually replaced with PX-10E

Thanks also for posting the catelogue...wow! It's even less impressive than I remembered! My parents tried to mail the bike to me when I was in school and it came with the forks all mangled, then they went to the trouble to get the post office to pay to fix it. Then I had to bum a ride from someone I didn't like, swallow my pride so I could find a shop in Philadelphia who wod fix it. Then, 3 moves later I got frustrated with all the crap I had to move and couldn't fit it in the U-Haul so I threw it in the dumpster. Now I just feel guilty about that and a lot of things so I'd love to find one like it and fix it up. Sort of a yin and yang thing. Anyway that's why I am on the hunt for a very mediocre, hi-ten bike.

I still have the first "real" bike my folks got me when I outgrew my Huffy BMX bike, a Huffy White Heat MTB. It migrated from their garage to a storage garage sometime after high school, and I only really looked at it again a few years ago. I was appalled by how crappy it actually was -- steel rims, flexy side-pull brakes, one-piece crank, etc. Then I felt guilty for thinking that, since I had wanted it so bad at the time and they had been kind enough to get it for me...

the Record was probably the most common Raleigh road bike in North America for the 1970s and 1980s. Keep searching CL and FB marketplace and one will turn up. My dad had one when I was growing up and I bought a newer (still 25 35 years old) one at a garage sale.

Please note that it is a very basic bike - pretty much the cheapest road bike Raleigh was making for most of it's production run. Not bad, still super fun to ride, but very basic. IMO any older '10 speed' that fits you will satisfy your desire for a retro ride, and many that you can find will be higher quality, more durable, and better to ride..

I paid $10 CDN for my red and black Record (also likely 1975 vintage) in ~2009 or so. I would say easily closer to 30lbs or more. Not a light bike, but a great rider.
Mine met its end one evening when I was riding through a field with my dog. She lurched forward just as I was trying to maneuver around a fallen tree, and she pulled me and the bike into the tree hard enough that the frame bent so far that the front wheel was overlapping the down tube.

When my Sting-Ray was stolen when I was 8, I was told I had to buy the replacement, 22 months of hard saving in the inflationary 1960's. Really drove home the effects of inflation as the price increases just meant one had to save that much more.
Then, there was no offer to assist with any more bikes. I was on my own. Made me a frugal and put off the small purchases.

I still have my too-big Raleigh Technium frame I bought used in '88 in my early teens. It got rode a lot until college and I switched to riding trashed mtbs. I got it back a few years ago, slightly mangled, after moving across the country. It spent at least a decade in a small metal shed being heat-cycled through midwestern weather. For a glued frame, yikes.

I will keep looking. It was the only the third bike I owned and at the time thought it was REALLY nice in that it came from a real bike store instead of JCPenney (1st) or yard sale (second). Obviously by today's standards a Denali might be just as good. It was one of the few nice things my old man did with me that didn't involve me getting hit or being cursed at so it was a good day. Good to know they are common. Thanks.

In the end, when you want an exact vintage bike in an exact size, eBay is the way to go.

Many years ago we moved, and the mover broke 2 turn of the century glass light shades on a 1910 chandelier we own. Gas light shades have much bigger fitters (openings where they attach) than electric ones, so the shades are rarer. Ours had a greek key motif etched into the glass. I struggled with trying to find replacements, with zero success. Then I realized, "check ebay". I ended up finding four replacements, at low pricing, within a week.

Ebay has its place. As a long term seller, I can tell you eBay abuses sellers for sure, but as a buyer, its great. As a seller, you have to expect some things to not go well. As soon as a comparable outlet is available, that gives me a similar global market, I am gone from ebay.

Keep your eyes open and one will eventually show up. My first "real" bike was an early 70s Record in yellow. I loved that bike and in my memory it was a much finer machine than was the case in reality. I've thought it would be fun to have one, but don't really have room to store it so I've passed on the ones I've seen. But I'll see one again and I'm sure you'll see your model. If you want it fast, you may need to go to eBay but if you're patient they show up in other places.
